When his sphere is disturbed, he is disturbed himself, and there is a discord in the melody of his life. If he can quicken the feeling of another to joy or to gratitude, by that much he adds to his own life; he becomes himself by that much more alive. Whether conscious of it or not, his thought is affected for the better by the joy or gratitude of another, and his power and vitality increase thereby, and the music of his life grows more in harmony.

Life is a place where it is necessary to move gently. Whether it be in thought, speech, or action, the rhythm must be controlled; the law of harmony must be observed in all that one does. If there is anything that will bring satisfaction it is diving deep into Love, and then we shall realize that there is nothing which is not just; we shall never again say that anything is unjust. This is the point the wise reach, and they call it the culmination of wisdom.

The more sincerity is developed, the greater share of truth you will have. Therefore we must never think we are sincere enough, and we must always be on our guard against influences which may carry us away from that sincerity which is the bridge between ourselves and our ideal. No study, no meditation is more helpful than sincerity itself.

When people came to Christ accusing a person of doing wrong, the Master could not think of anything else but forgiveness. For he did not see in the wrongdoer what the others saw. To distinguish between right and wrong is not the work of an ordinary mind, and the curious thing is that the more ignorant a person is, the more ready he is to do so.

In Sufi terms the crushing of the ego is called Nafs Kushi. And how do we crush it? We crush it by sometimes taking ourselves to task. When the self says, 'O no, I must not be treated like this,' then we say, 'What does it matter?' When the self says, 'He ought to have done this, she ought to have said that,' we say, 'What does it matter, either this way or that way? Every person is what he is; you cannot change him, but you can change yourself.' That is the crushing. ... It is only in this way that we can crush our ego.

There is no greater religion than love. God is love; and the best form of love is to be conscientious regarding the feelings of those with whom we come in contact in everyday life.

His constant fight is with the Nafs (self-interest), the root of all disharmony and the only enemy of man. By crushing this enemy man gains mastery over himself; this wins for him mastery over the whole universe, because the wall standing between the self and the Almighty has been broken down. Gentleness, mildness, respect, humility, modesty, self-denial, conscientiousness, tolerance and forgiveness are considered by the Sufi as the attributes which produce harmony within one's own soul as well as within that of another.

Among all the valuable things of this world, the word is the most precious. For in the word one can find a light which gems and jewels do not possess; a word may contain so much life that it can heal the wounds of the heart. Therefore, poetry in which the soul is expressed is as living as a human being. The greatest reward that God bestows on man is eloquence and poetry. This is not an exaggeration, for it is the gift of the poet that culminates, in time, with the gift of prophecy.

Every mind has its particular standard of good and bad, and of right and wrong. This standard is made by what one has experienced through life, by what one has seen or heard; it also depends upon one's belief in a certain religion, one's birth in a certain nation and origin in a certain race. But what can really be called good or bad, right or wrong, is what comforts the mind and what causes it discomfort. It is not true, although it appears so, that it is discomfort that causes wrongdoing. In reality, it is wrongdoing which causes discomfort, and it is right-doing which gives comfort.

The heart becomes wide by forgetting self, but narrow by thinking of the self and pitying one's self. To gain a wide and broad heart you must have something before you to look upon, and to rest your intelligence upon - and that something is the God-ideal.

In a small affair or in a big affair, first consult yourself and find out if there is any conflict in your own being about anything you want to do. And when you find no conflict there, then feel sure that a path is already made for you. You have but to open your eyes and take a step forward, and the other step will be led by God.

समझदार वही है जिसका मन उसकी इच्छा से निर्देशित होता है, जिसका मन उसके इरादों को पूरा करता है, जिसका मन उसके इरादे के नियंत्रण में होता है... जब तक कोई व्यक्ति अपने मन पर विजय प्राप्त नहीं कर लेता, जब तक वह इस गतिविधि से ऊपर नहीं उठ जाता, तब तक वह एक शासक शक्ति, एक सच्चा इंसान नहीं होता।

He is thoughtful whose mind is directed by his will, whose mind fulfills his intentions, whose mind is under the control of his intention... It is not till a person has gained mastery over his mind, till he is above this activity, that he is a ruling power, a true person.

There should be balance in all our actions; to be either extreme or lukewarm is equally bad.

The happiness of this world is something we cannot keep; it is just like the horizon - the nearer you go, the farther it goes. As soon as you get it, you see it is not the thing you wanted.

The sage said, "The best thing is not to hate anyone, only to love. That is the only way out of it. As soon as you have forgiven those whom you hate, you have gotten rid of them. Then you have no reason to hate them; you just forget. spiritual Dimensions of Psychology."

‎"Intellect is the knowledge obtained by experience of names and forms; wisdom is the knowledge which manifests only from the inner being; to acquire intellect one must delve into studies, but to obtain wisdom, nothing but the flow of divine mercy is needed; it is as natural as the instinct of swimming to the fish, or of flying to the bird. Intellect is the sight which enables one to see through the external world, but the light of wisdom enables one to see through the external into the internal world.

Don't be concerned about being disloyal to your pain by being joyous.

Resignation is a quality of the saintly souls.

The lover's pleasure is in the pleasure of the beloved. The lover is satisfied when the beloved is fed. The lover is vain when the beloved is adorned.

जिसे हम अपनी रोज़मर्रा की भाषा में संगीत कहते हैं, वह उस संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांडीय संगीत या सामंजस्य (हार्मोनी) का केवल एक छोटा सा रूप मात्र है जो हर चीज़ के पीछे सक्रिय है, और जो प्रकृति का स्रोत एवं उद्गम है। यही कारण है कि हर काल के बुद्धिजीवियों और संतों ने संगीत को एक पवित्र कला माना है। क्योंकि संगीत में एक द्रष्टा पूरे ब्रह्मांड का चित्र देख सकता है; और एक ज्ञानी संगीत के क्षेत्र में संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड की कार्यप्रणाली के रहस्य और प्रकृति की व्याख्या कर सकता है।

What we call music in our everyday language is only a miniature, which our intelligence has grasped from that music or harmony of the whole universe which is working behind everything, and which is the source and origin of nature. It is because of this that the wise of all ages have considered music to be a sacred art. For in music the seer can see the picture of the whole universe; and the wise can interpret the secret and nature of the working of the whole universe in the realm of music.

प्रकृति के छुपे हुए नियमों को जाने बिना इस दुनिया में जीना ऐसा ही है जैसे उस देश की भाषा न जानना जिसमें आप पैदा हुए हैं।

Living in the world without insight into the hidden laws of nature is like not knowing the language of the country in which one was born.

अच्छे और बुरे का भेद मनुष्य की आत्मा में होता है। हर इंसान इसका खुद फैसला कर सकता है, क्योंकि हर इंसान में सौंदर्य के प्रति प्रशंसा का भाव होता है। ख़ुशी सिर्फ़ उस बात को सोचने या करने में है जिसे कोई सुंदर मानता है। ऐसा कार्य एक सदाचार या अच्छाई बन जाता है।

The discrimination between good and evil is in man's soul. Every man can judge that for himself, because in every man is the sense of admiration of beauty. Happiness only lies in thinking or doing that which one considers beautiful. Such an act becomes a virtue or goodness.

The first lesson to learn is to resign oneself to the little difficulties in life, not to hit out at everything one comes up against. If one were able to manage this one would not need to cultivate great power; even one's presence would be healing.

Things of heaven cannot be obtained by perseverance; they are the grace of God. To open to this and trust in it is how belief is crystallized into faith. We cannot pay for it in any form, in any way, by our goodness, by our piety, by our great qualities, merits, or virtues; nothing. It is a gift, and all we can do is receive it.

Our spirit is the real part of us, the body but its garment. A man would not find peace at the tailor's because his coat comes from there; neither can the spirit obtain true happiness from the earth just because his body belongs to earth.

जीवन के उस एक ही स्पिरिट (आत्मा/परमात्मा) को अलग-अलग पवित्र नाम दिए गए हैं। हम जीवन के उस स्पिरिट को उस विशेष नाम से अधिक आसानी से पहचान लेते हैं जिसके हम आदी हैं। यहाँ तक तो हम ठीक हैं, लेकिन हम जो गलती करते हैं—और जिससे हमारा ही नुकसान होता है—वह यह है कि हम उसी सत्य को इसलिए नज़रअंदाज़ या अस्वीकार कर देते हैं क्योंकि वह हमें किसी अन्य रूप में और किसी अन्य नाम से मिला है। हम उसे सीमित कर देते हैं। हम कहते हैं कि सत्य केवल उसी काल में मौजूद था जब कुछ विशेष गुरु इस दुनिया में आए थे, और उसके बाद वह समाप्त हो गया।

The one Spirit of life is given different names, the sacred names. We more easily recognize the Spirit of life by the particular name to which we are accustomed. So far we are right, but the mistake we make, and it is to our loss, is to ignore or deny the same truth because it is given to us in another form and under another name. We limit it. We say the truth existed only in that period when certain teachers came to the world, and that after that it stopped.

विश्राम ही सभी चिंतन और ध्यान का रहस्य है, जीवन के उस पहलू के साथ एक होने का रहस्य है जो सभी चीज़ों का सार है। जब कोई व्यक्ति विश्राम करने का आदी नहीं होता, तो वह यह नहीं जानता कि उसके वजूद के पीछे क्या है।

Repose is the secret of all contemplation and meditation, the secret of getting in tune with that aspect of life which is the essence of all things. When one is not accustomed to take repose, one does not know what is behind one's being.

हम इंसान, यदि हमारे दिलों में अच्छाई या दया का एक छोटा सा भी स्पार्क (चिंगारी) है, तो हम लोगों का न्याय करने से बचते हैं। हम किसी की आलोचना करने के बजाय उसे माफ़ करना बेहतर समझते हैं।

We, the human beings in this world, if there is a spark of goodness or kindness in our hearts, avoid judging people. We prefer forgiving to judging.

Consciously or unconsciously, every being is capable of healing himself or others.

By our trust in the divine beauty in every person we develop that beauty in ourselves.

यदि लोग अपने ही धर्म को ठीक से जान लें, तो वे कितने सहनशील हो जाएं, और दूसरों के धर्म के प्रति किसी भी प्रकार की कड़वाहट या द्वेष से कितने मुक्त हो जाएं।

If people but knew their own religion, how tolerant they would become, and how free from any grudge against the religion of others.

If there is anything that gives kingliness to the soul, it is patience. What was the secret of the masters who have accomplished great things, who have inspired many and who have helped many souls? Their secret was patience.

Atmosphere is a silent music. It has its effect upon the listener, exciting or peaceful, whatever it may be.

People who have never had an ideal may hope to find one; they are in a better state than the people who allow the circumstances of life to break their ideal. To fall beneath one's ideal is to lose one's track in life; then confusion rises in the mind, and that light which one should hold high becomes covered and obscured, so that it cannot shine out to light one's path.

सूफीवाद न तो कोई धर्म है और न ही कोई दर्शन, यह न तो आस्तिकता है और न ही नास्तिकता, न ही यह कोई नीतिशास्त्र है, और न ही किसी विशेष प्रकार का रहस्यवाद, क्योंकि यह सामान्य धार्मिक संप्रदायवाद से पूरी तरह मुक्त है। यदि इसे कभी धर्म कहा जा सकता है, तो यह केवल प्रेम, सद्भाव और सौंदर्य का धर्म होगा।

Sufism is not a religion or a philosophy, it is neither deism nor atheism, nor is it a moral, nor a special kind of mysticism, being free from the usual religious sectarianism. If ever it could be called a religion, it would only be as a religion of love, harmony, and beauty.

कितना भी पढ़ा-लिखा और अपनी कार्यकुशलता में माहिर व्यक्ति क्यों न हो, यदि उसमें कृतज्ञता का अभाव है, तो वह चरित्र की उस सुंदरता से वंचित है जो व्यक्तित्व को सुगंधित बनाती है।

A person however learned and qualified in his life's work in whom gratitude is absent, is devoid of that beauty of character which makes personality fragrant.

बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को प्रेम और शक्ति के बीच संतुलन बनाए रखना चाहिए; उसे अपने स्वभाव में प्रेम को हमेशा बढ़ाते और विस्तृत करते रहना चाहिए, और साथ ही अपनी इच्छाशक्ति को इतना मजबूत करना चाहिए कि उसका दिल आसानी से न टूटे।

The wise man should keep the balance between love and power; he should keep the love in his nature ever increasing and expanding, and at the same time strengthen the will so that the heart may not easily be broken.

अपनी संपूर्ण कार्यप्रणाली वाला यह शरीर, आत्मा के शरीर से निकल जाने पर अपनी शक्ति, चुंबकत्व, सौंदर्य और चमक खो देता है। यह दर्शाता है कि शक्ति, चुंबकत्व, सौंदर्य और चमक शरीर के नहीं बल्कि आत्मा के हैं।

The body with its perfect mechanism loses power, magnetism, beauty, and brightness, when the soul departs from the body. This shows that the power, magnetism, beauty, and brightness belong to the soul.

अद्भुत बात यह है कि आत्मा कुछ हद तक पहले से ही यह जानती है कि इस परदे के पीछे कुछ है—भ्रम का जो परदा है उसके पीछे—कि जीवन के सर्वोच्च क्षेत्रों में कुछ ऐसा है जिसे तलाशना है, कि देखने के लिए कोई सौंदर्य है, कि कोई ऐसा है जिसे जाना जा सकता है।

The wonderful thing is that the soul already knows to some extent that there is something behind the veil, the veil of perplexity, that there is something to be sought for in the highest spheres of life, that there is some beauty to be seen, that there is Someone to be known who is knowable.

संगीत उपचारात्मक होना चाहिए, संगीत आत्मा को ऊपर उठाने वाला होना चाहिए, संगीत में प्रेरणा देने की शक्ति होनी चाहिए; तब यदि इसे सही मायनों में समझा जाए, तो ईश्वर के करीब जाने का, आध्यात्मिक रूप से ऊपर उठने का और आध्यात्मिक पूर्णता प्राप्त करने का इससे बेहतर कोई और तरीका नहीं है।

Music should be healing, music should uplift the soul, music should inspire; then there is no better way of getting closer to God, of rising higher towards the spirit, of attaining spiritual perfection, only if it is rightly understood.

मानव जाति एक-दूसरे पर निर्भर है, और हर एक की ख़ुशी सभी की ख़ुशी पर निर्भर करती है, और यही वह सबक है जिसे मानवता को आज पहले और आखिरी सबक के रूप में सीखना है।

Mankind is interdependent, and the happiness of each depends upon the happiness of all, and it is this lesson that humanity has to learn today as the first and the last lesson.

एक गुरु अच्छे में बुरा और बुरे में अच्छा देख लेता है।

A master sees the bad in the good, and the good in the bad.

The greatest is to have a tendency to friendship; this is expressed in the form of tolerance and forgiveness, in the form of service and trust. In whatever form he may express it this is the central theme: the constant desire to prove one's love for humanity, to be the friend of all.

He who once burns his mouth on the hot soup, blows even the buttermilk.

हर चीज़ का मूल्य मनुष्य के लिए तभी तक रहता है जब तक वह उसे पूरी तरह समझ नहीं पाता। जब वह उसे पूरी तरह समझ लेता है, तो उसका मूल्य समाप्त हो जाता है, चाहे वह सबसे तुच्छ चीज़ हो या सबसे महान चीज़।

For the value of everything exists for man only so long as he does not understand it. When he has fully understood, the value is lost, be it the lowest thing or the highest thing.

माया के इस संसार में, जहाँ परीक्षा के अंत में हम पाते हैं कि हर चीज़ का बहुत कम महत्व है, बहुत कम मूल्य है, यदि वास्तविकता का कोई संकेत है, जिस पर कोई भरोसा कर सकता है और जिसमें कोई अनंतता (शाश्वतता) की झलक पा सकता है, तो वह मित्रता की निरंतरता में है।

In this world of illusion, where at the end of the examination, we find everything to be of little importance, of little worth, if there is a sign of reality, of something one can depend upon, and in which one can recognize a sign of eternity, it is in the constancy of friendship.

The gardener uses both roses in the flowerbed and thorns in making fences.

प्रेम में ही समस्त ज्ञान निवास करता है। यह मनुष्य का प्रेम और चीज़ों के प्रति उसका आकर्षण ही है जो समय आने पर उनके रहस्यों को उजागर करता है।

In love abides all knowledge. It is mankind's love and interest in things that in time reveals their secret.

जब हम सत्य के आमने-सामने होते हैं, तो कृष्ण, बुद्ध, ईसा मसीह या किसी अन्य पैगंबर का दृष्टिकोण एक ही होता है। जब हम पहाड़ की चोटी से जीवन को देखते हैं, तो कोई सीमा नहीं होती; वहाँ केवल असीम विस्तार होता है।

When we are face to face with truth, the point of view of Krishna, Buddha, Christ, or any other Prophet, is the same. When we look at life from the top of the mountain, there is no limitation; there is the same immensity.

जीवन में आपकी जो भी रुचि हो—कला, कविता, मूर्तिकला, संगीत, आपका कोई भी पेशा हो—आप पादरियों की तरह ही आध्यात्मिक जीवन जी सकते हैं, और हमेशा प्रशंसा और कृतज्ञता से भरा जीवन बिता सकते हैं।

Whatever your life's pursuit -- art, poetry, sculpture, music, whatever your occupation may be -- you can be as spiritual as clergy, always living a life of praise.

जब तक प्रेम में 'मैं' और 'तू' का भेद रहता है, तब तक प्रेम पूरी तरह प्रज्वलित नहीं होता।

As long as in love there is "you" and "me," love is not fully kindled.

दैनिक जीवन में अक्सर यह देखा जाता है कि जो व्यक्ति पहले से ही अपना आपा खो चुका है, उस पर गुस्सा करके आप कुछ हासिल नहीं करते, बल्कि सिर्फ़ मूर्खता के रास्ते पर चल पड़ते हैं। जिस व्यक्ति में इतना आत्म-नियंत्रण है कि वह उस पल भी शांत खड़ा रहे जब दूसरा गुस्से में है, वही अंत में जीतता है। वह नहीं जीता जिसने सौ शब्द ऊँची आवाज़ में कहे हैं; जीत उसी की होती है जिसने शायद सिर्फ़ एक ही शब्द कहा हो।

Very often in everyday life one sees that by losing one's temper with someone who has already lost his, one does not gain anything but only sets out upon the path of stupidity. He who has enough self-control to stand firm at the moment when the other person is in a temper, wins in the end. It is not he who has spoken a hundred words aloud who has won; it is he who has perhaps spoken only one word.

जबकि लोग दूसरों को उनके अपने नैतिक दृष्टिकोण से परखते हैं, वहीं एक समझदार व्यक्ति दूसरे के दृष्टिकोण से भी चीज़ों को देखता है।

While people judge others from their own moral standpoint, the wise person looks also at the point of view of another.

समर्पण का अर्थ है आत्म-अस्वीकार में संतुष्टि पाना (आत्म-अस्वीकार का अर्थ अपने निचले अहम या अहंकार का त्याग करना है)।

To be resigned means to find satisfaction in self-denial (Self-denial is the denial of one's lower self).

मानवता, ईश्वर की एक सीमा है; और देवत्व, मनुष्य की पूर्णता है।

Humanity, divine limitation; Divinity, human perfection.

ऐसी दो स्थितियाँ हैं जिनसे हम अपनी क्रियाओं पर नियंत्रण पा सकते हैं। पहली है अपनी इच्छाशक्ति की शक्ति पर अटूट विश्वास; यह जानना कि यदि आज हम असफल हुए हैं, तो कल हम ऐसा नहीं करेंगे। दूसरी है अपनी आँखें पूरी तरह खुली रखना, और जीवन के हर पहलू में अपनी हर गतिविधि पर बारीक़ी से नज़र रखना। हम अंधेरे में ही गिरते हैं, लेकिन प्रकाश में हमें साफ़ दिखाई देता है कि हम कहाँ जा रहे हैं।

There are two ways in which we may attain control over our activity. The first is confidence in the power of our own will; to know that if we have failed today, tomorrow we will not do so. The second is to have our eyes wide open, and to watch keenly our activity in all aspects of life. It is in the dark that we fall, but in the light we can see where we are going.

अक्सर निराशावादी लोग अपनी ही इच्छा के विपरीत बातें करते हैं। वे कोई काम शुरू करना चाहते हैं, और कहते हैं, 'मैं यह करूँगा तो सही, लेकिन मुझे नहीं लगता कि मैं इसमें सफल हो पाऊंगा।' इस प्रकार वे खुद अपने रास्ते में रुकावट पैदा करते हैं। मनुष्य यह नहीं जानता कि उसका हर एक विचार उसकी चेतना पर और उस लय पर एक गहरी छाप छोड़ता है जिससे उसकी चेतना काम कर रही है। उसी लय के अनुसार वह विचार सच होकर सामने आता है और घटित होता है; और इन सब बातों से अनभिज्ञ मनुष्य खुद ही अपनी नासमझी के कारण अपना सबसे बड़ा दुश्मन साबित होता है।

Very often pessimistic people speak against their own desire. They want to undertake some work, and they say, 'I will do this, but I don't think I shall succeed in it.' Thus they hinder themselves in their path. Man does not know that every thought makes an impression on the consciousness and on the rhythm with which the consciousness is working. According to that rhythm that reflection will come true and happen; and a man proves to be his own enemy by his ignorance of these things.

संगीत, जिसे हम अपनी रोज़मर्रा की भाषा में इस्तेमाल करते हैं, हमारे प्रियतम (ईश्वर) के स्वरूप से कम कुछ नहीं है। चूँकि संगीत हमारे प्रियतम की तस्वीर है, इसीलिए हम संगीत से प्रेम करते हैं।

Music, the word we use in our everyday language, is nothing less than the picture of our Beloved. It is because music is the picture of our Beloved that we love music.

संगीत में उपचार की शक्ति होनी चाहिए। संगीत आत्मा को ऊपर उठाने वाला होना चाहिए। संगीत प्रेरणादायक होना चाहिए।

Music should be healing. Music should uplift the soul. Music should inspire.

जो चीज़ भी दिल में किसी पाने की लालसा पैदा करती है, वह उसकी आज़ादी छीन लेती है।

All that produces longing in the heart deprives it of its freedom.

हर आत्मा जिस शांति के लिए तरसती है, जो ईश्वर का सच्चा स्वरूप है और मनुष्य का परम लक्ष्य है, वह और कुछ नहीं बल्कि आपसी मेल-मिलाप और सद्भाव का परिणाम है।

The peace for which every soul strives and which is the true nature of God and the utmost goal of a man is but the outcome of harmony.

मैंने अपना संगीत इसलिए छोड़ दिया क्योंकि उससे मुझे जितना पाना था, वह सब मिल चुका था। ईश्वर की सेवा के लिए सबसे प्यारी चीज़ का बलिदान देना पड़ता है, और मैंने अपनी सबसे प्यारी चीज़ यानी अपना संगीत कुर्बान कर दिया।

I gave up my music because I had received from it all I had to receive. To serve God one must sacrifice the dearest thing, and I sacrificed my music, the dearest thing to me.

दुनिया के लोग उन चीज़ों को भी कठोर और निश्चित बनाना चाहते हैं जो बेहद सूक्ष्म हैं और जिन्हें शब्दों में बयां नहीं किया जा सकता। जब कोई परलोक का वर्णन करता है, तो यह ऐसा ही है जैसे कोई आत्मा को तौलना या उसकी तस्वीर खींचना चाहता हो। मेरा व्यक्तिगत रूप से मानना है कि परलोक क्या है, इसका अनुभव आपको खुद होना चाहिए। आपको मेरे शब्दों पर निर्भर नहीं रहना चाहिए।

People in the world wish to make things rigid, things which are of the finest nature which words cannot explain. When a person describes the hereafter, it is just like wanting to weigh the soul or photograph the spirit. I personally think that you must be able to realize yourself what the hereafter is. You must not depend upon my words.

एक बार जब आप अपने सीमित अहंकार को स्वेच्छा से असीमित में समर्पित कर देते हैं, तो उस चेतना में आपको इतनी खुशी मिलती है कि आप फिर से छोटा महसूस करना ही नहीं चाहेंगे।

Once you have given up your limited self willingly to the Unlimited, you will rejoice so much in that consciousness that you will not care to be small again.

दिल की गहराई से की गई प्रार्थना और महज़ ऊपरी तौर पर की गई प्रार्थना में बहुत अंतर होता है। इंसान अक्सर वह दोहराता है जिसे ईसा मसीह ने 'व्यर्थ की रट' कहा है, बस प्रार्थना को रटते जाना; जिसमें इंसान का मन प्रार्थना के अर्थ पर टिकता ही नहीं। लेकिन अगर आपके दिल की गहराई ने उस प्रार्थना को सुन लिया है, तो समझ लीजिए कि ईश्वर ने उसे सुन लिया है।

Prayer from the depth and prayer from the surface are two prayers. One can utter what Christ has called 'vain repetitions', just repeating the prayer; one does not fix one's mind on the meaning of the prayer. If the depth of one's heart has heard the prayer, God has heard it.

ईश्वर न्याय नहीं है। न्याय उसका स्वभाव है, लेकिन उसका प्रेम सर्वोपरि है। लोग कर्म और उसके परिणामों को बहुत ज़्यादा महत्व देते हैं। वे नहीं जानते कि कर्म और परिणाम से परे एक ऐसा नियम है जो नरक की आग को भी बुझा सकता है, जो तब भी कायम रह सकता है जब पूरी दुनिया तबाही के सैलाब में डूब रही हो; वे नहीं जानते कि प्रेम की शक्ति किसी भी अन्य शक्ति से महान है।

God is not justice. Justice is in his nature, but love is predominant. People attach such importance to actions and their results. They do not know that above action and result is a law which can consume the fire of hell, which can dominate even if the whole world were being drowned in the flood of destruction; they do not know that the power of love is greater than any other.

आप जीवन को जिस भी दृष्टिकोण या स्तर से देखते हैं, चीज़ें आपको वैसी ही दिखाई देती हैं। जब समतल ज़मीन पर खड़ा कोई व्यक्ति पहाड़ की चोटी पर खड़े व्यक्ति से पूछता है, "क्या तुम भी किसी चीज़ में विश्वास रखते हो?", तो वह व्यक्ति ज़्यादा कुछ समझा नहीं पाता। सवाल पूछने वाले को खुद पहाड़ की चोटी पर चढ़कर देखना होगा। तब तक उनके बीच संवाद का कोई माध्यम नहीं हो सकता।

Things appear different from every different plane from which you look at them, and when a person standing on flat earth asks a person standing on top of a mountain, "Do you also believe something?" the person cannot tell much. The questioner must come to the top of the mountain and see. There can be no link of conversation between them until that time.

मैंने हर शब्द में एक खास संगीतात्मकता पाई है, हर विचार में एक धुन और हर भावना में एक सुर-ताल महसूस किया है। और मैंने उन्हीं बातों को बहुत ही स्पष्ट और सरल शब्दों में उन लोगों तक पहुँचाने की कोशिश की है जो कभी मेरा संगीत सुना करते थे।

I have found in every word a certain musical value, a melody in every thought, harmony in every feeling, and I have tried to interpret the same things with clear and simple words to those who used to listen to my music.

सच तो यह है कि मनुष्य एक ही इकाई है जिसके दो पहलू हैं, ठीक उस रेखा की तरह जिसके दो छोर होते हैं। यदि आप छोरों को देखें, तो वे दो हैं। यदि आप पूरी रेखा को देखें, तो वह एक है। रेखा का एक सिरा सीमित है, तो दूसरा सिरा असीमित है। एक सिरा इंसान है, तो दूसरा सिरा ईश्वर है।

The truth is that man is one individual with two aspects, just like one line with two ends. If you look at the ends, it is two. If you look at the line, it is one. One end of the line is limited, the other end of the line is unlimited. One end is man, the other end is God.

यदि संत जैसी कोई त्याग की भावना होती है, तो वह बड़े लाभ के लिए छोटे लाभों को छोड़ना है; किसी मकसद के बिना नहीं, बल्कि खुली आँखों से यह देखकर कि क्या बेहतर है और क्या कमतर। यदि चुनाव दो पल भर के लाभों के बीच भी करना पड़े, तो उनमें से एक हमेशा ज़्यादा वास्तविक और टिकाऊ साबित होगा; और समय आने पर उसी का अनुसरण किया जाना चाहिए।

If there is such a thing as saintly renunciation, it is renouncing small gains for better gains; not for no gains, but seeing with open eyes what is better and what is inferior. Even if the choice has to lie between two momentary gains, one of these would always be found to be more real and lasting; that is the one that should be followed for the time.

जीवन में जो कुछ भी आपके पास है उसी में संतुष्ट रहिए; जो आपका नहीं है उसके लिए आभारी रहिए क्योंकि इससे आपकी ज़िम्मेदारियाँ बहुत कम हो जाती हैं। हाँ, अपनी ज़रूरतों को पाने की कोशिश ज़रूर कीजिए और अपने जीवन के हर पल का पूरी तरह से आनंद लीजिए।

Be contented with what you possess in life; be thankful for what does not belong to you, for it is so much less care; but try to obtain what you need, and make the best of every moment of your life.

अगर कोई इंसान ठंडा और संवेदनहीन है, तो वह अपने भीतर ऐसा महसूस करता मानो किसी कब्र में कैद हो। वह जीवित नहीं है, वह इस जीवन का आनंद नहीं ले सकता क्योंकि वह न तो खुद को अभिव्यक्त कर सकता है और न ही बाहर की रोशनी और जीवन को देख सकता है। आखिर कौन सी चीज़ इंसान को हृदय की कोमलता विकसित करने से रोकती है? उसका यह हिसाब-किताब रखने वाला रवैया। वह प्यार का भी व्यापार करना चाहता है। वह कहता है, 'अगर तुम मुझसे प्यार करोगे, तभी मैं तुमसे प्यार करूंगा।' जैसे ही कोई इंसान अपने एहसानों, अपनी सेवाओं और अपने प्यार को तौलने और मापने लगता है, वह यह भूल जाता है कि प्यार असल में होता क्या है। प्यार तो बस अपने प्रिय को देखता है और उसके अलावा कुछ नहीं।

If a person is cold and rigid, he feels within himself as if he were in a grave. He is not living, he cannot enjoy this life for he cannot express himself and he cannot see the light and life outside. What keeps man from developing the heart quality? His exacting attitude. He wants to make a business of love. He says, 'If you will love me, I will love you.' As soon as a man measures and weighs his favors and his services and all that he does for one whom he loves, he ceases to know what love is. Love sees the beloved and nothing else.

खुद पर दया करना यानी खुद को सबसे बड़ी गरीबी में रखना। जब कोई व्यक्ति दयनीय भाव से 'मैं हूँ...' कहता है, तो कुछ और बोलने से पहले ही वह अपने अस्तित्व को आधा कर देता है; और इसके आगे जो भी कहा जाता है, वह उसे पूरी तरह मिटा देता है; अंत में उसका कुछ नहीं बचता।

Self-pity is the worst poverty. When a person says, 'I am...' with pity, before he has said anything more he has diminished himself to half of what he is; and what is said further, diminishes him totally; nothing more of him is left afterwards.

क्या आप जानते हैं कि अपना भोजन किसी और को देकर खुद भूखे रहने का अहसास क्या होता है? इससे जो खुशी मिलती है, वह किसी भी छप्पर फाड़ दावत से नहीं मिल सकती। क्या आप जानते हैं कि अपना कोट किसी को देकर खुद ठंड में रहने का मतलब क्या होता है? यह आपको वह आनंद देता है जो आपकी अपनी इच्छाएं पूरी होने पर भी नहीं मिल सकता।

Have you known what it is to give your meal to another and to go without yourself? It gives a happiness that no dinner eaten by yourself can give. Have you known what it is to give your coat to another and do without it yourself? It gives a joy that the satisfaction of your own wants cannot give you.

जो लोग सीखने की चाह लेकर आते हैं लेकिन साथ ही दूसरों को सिखाने की इच्छा भी रखते हैं, उन्हें शिष्यों का ढोंग नहीं करना चाहिए; उन्हें सीधे एक शिक्षक के रूप में आना चाहिए।

Those who have a desire to teach while coming to learn should not pose as disciples; they must come as teachers.

मैंने गाने रचे, गाए और वीणा बजाई। इस संगीत का अभ्यास करते-करते मैं एक ऐसे पड़ाव पर पहुँचा जहाँ मैंने ब्रह्मांड के संगीत को छू लिया। तब हर आत्मा एक सुर बन गई, और पूरा जीवन ही संगीत बन गया। इसी से प्रेरित होकर मैंने लोगों से बात की, और जो लोग मेरे शब्दों से आकर्षित हुए, वे मेरे गाने सुनने के बजाय मेरी बातें सुनने लगे।

I had composed songs, I sang, and played the vina. Practising this music I arrived at a stage where I touched the music of the spheres. Then every soul became a musical note, and all life became music. Inspired by it I spoke to the people, and those who were attracted by my words listened to them instead of listening to my songs.

इसी भौतिक शरीर के माध्यम से जीवन के सबसे बड़े और उच्चतम उद्देश्यों को प्राप्त किया जाता है। अज्ञानतावश ही लोग इसे केवल एक भौतिक शरीर कहते हैं। लेकिन एक बार जब ज्ञान प्राप्त हो जाता है... तो इंसान इसे ईश्वर का एक पवित्र मंदिर मानने लगता है।

It is through this physical body that the highest and greatest purpose of life is achieved. A person only calls it the physical body in ignorance. Once the knowledge has come...he begins to look upon it as the sacred temple of God.

मैं तब तक वीणा बजाता रहा जब तक कि मेरा दिल खुद वही वाद्ययंत्र नहीं बन गया। फिर मैंने इस दिल रूपी वाद्ययंत्र को उस दिव्य संगीतकार को सौंप दिया, जो इस पूरी सृष्टि का एकमात्र संगीतकार है। तब से मैं उसकी बाँसुरी बन गया हूँ, और जब वह चाहता है, अपनी धुन बजाता है। लोग इस संगीत का श्रेय मुझे देते हैं, जो वास्तव में मेरा नहीं, बल्कि उस संगीतकार का है जो खुद अपना ساز (वाद्ययंत्र) बजा रहा है।

I played the vina until my heart turned into the same instrument. Then I offered this instrument to the Divine Musician, the only muscian existing. Since then I have become His flute, and when He chooses He plays His music. The people give me credit for this music which, in reality, is not due to me, but to the Musician who plays his own instrument.

भरोसा करने लायक अगर कुछ है, तो वह है ईश्वर की कृपा। न तो अपनी पढ़ाई पर घमंड करें और न ही अपनी साधना पर, हालाँकि दोनों ही आपकी मदद करती हैं। अंततः आप ईश्वर पर निर्भर हैं, यहाँ तक कि अपने मुर्शिद (गुरु) पर भी नहीं। उसी को खोजिए, उसी पर भरोसा रखिए। उसी में आपके जीवन का उद्देश्य छिपा है, और उसी में आपकी आत्मा की सच्ची शांति निहित है।

The one thing to rely upon is God's favor. Do not build either on your study or on your meditation, although they both help you. But you are dependent on God, not even on your murshid. Seek Him, trust Him. In Him lies your life's purpose, and in Him is hidden the rest of your soul.

जो चीज़ आपके पास है, आप वह कैसे हो सकते हैं? आप एक ही समय में घोड़ा और घुड़सवार दोनों नहीं हो सकते। यहीं नश्वरता और अमरता का रहस्य छिपा है।

How can you be that which you possess? You cannot be the horse and rider at the same time. Herein lies the secret of mortality and immortality.

हम किसी सम्मोहन या प्रभाव के अधीन हो सकते हैं, लेकिन हमें उस शक्ति से पार पाना होगा; हमें बुराई से खुद को आज़ाद कराना होगा। हर कोई इसके खिलाफ लड़ सकता है।

We can be under the power of a spell, but we must overcome such a power; we must liberate ourselves from evil. Everyone can fight.
