मैं इसी में जीना चाहूँगा; इसी में मरना चाहूँगा; इसी में अपने विचारों और भावनाओं कोमग्न रखना चाहूँगा; इस संसार की सभी बनावटी सुंदरताओं के मुरझाने और नष्ट होने तक, यहाँ की हर चीज़ को क्रूस पर चढ़ाने तक, जब तक कि वे मेरे लिए एक मृत और बदसूरत चीज़ न बन जाएँ, जो प्रेमभरे आलिंगन के योग्य बिल्कुल न हो।

Herein would I live; herein would I die; hereon would I dwell in my thoughts and affections; to the withering and consumption of all the painted beauties of this world, unto the crucifying all things here below, until they become unto me a dead and deformed thing, no way meet for affectionate embraces.

There neither is, nor ever was, in the world, nor ever shall be, the least dram of holiness, but what, flowing from Jesus Christ, is communicated by the Spirit, according to the truth and promise of the gospel.

Faith is the leading grace in all our spiritual warfare and conflict; but all along while we live, it hath faithful company that adheres to it, and helps it. Love works, and hope works, and all other graces, — self-denial, readiness to the cross, — they all work and help faith. But when we come to die, faith is left alone. Now, try what faith will do.

Would a soul continually eye His everlasting tenderness and compassion...[then] it could not bear an hour's absence from Him; whereas now, perhaps, it cannot watch with him one hour.

The Scripture abounds in commands and cautions for our utmost diligence in our search and inquiry as to whether we are made partakers of Christ or not, or whether His Spirit dwells in us or not-which argue both the difficulty of attaining an assured confidence herein, as also the danger of our being mistaken, and yet the certainty of a good issue upon the diligent and regular use of means to that purpose.

To the sick man the physician when he enters seems to have three faces, those of a man, a devil, a god. When the physician first comes and announces the safety of the patient, then the sick man says: "Behold a God or a guardian angel!

We are taught in an especial manner to pray that God would give his Holy Spirit unto us, that through his aid and assistance we may live unto God in that holy obedience which he requires at our hands.

The new goddess contingency could not be erected until the God of heaven was utterly despoiled of his dominion over the sons of men, and in the room thereof a home-bred idol of self-sufficiency set up, and the world persuaded to worship it. But that the building climb no higher, let all men observe how the word of God overthrows this babylonian tower.

Let, then, the word be preached, and the sins of men will be rebuked, lust will be restrained, and some oppositions will be made against sin, though that be not the effect aimed at.

इसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं कि ऐसे लोग आरोपित धार्मिकता को किसी सपने की छाया की तरह देखते हैं, जो उन बातों को केवल बेतुकी कल्पनाएँ मानते हैं जो इसकी आवश्यकता को साबित करती हैं। और ऐसे लोगों को मसीह की धार्मिकता को अपने ऊपर आरोपित के रूप में मूल्यवान मानने की बहुत कम उम्मीद है, जो अपने भीतर निहित अपनी ही अधार्मिकता से इतने अनजान हैं। जब तक मनुष्य खुद को बेहतर ढंग से नहीं जान लेते, तब तक उन्हें मसीह को जानने की बहुत कम परवाह होगी।

No wonder if such persons look upon imputed righteousness as the shadow of a dream, who esteem those things which evidence its necessity to be but fond imaginations. And small hope is there to bring such men to value the righteousness of Christ, as imputed to them, who are so unacquainted with their own unrighteousness inherent in them. Until men know themselves better, they will care very little to know Christ at all.

एक जीवंत झरने से लगातार पोषित होने वाली नदी महासागर तक पहुँचने से पहले अपनी धाराओं को समाप्त कर सकती है, लेकिन अनुग्रह की गति और प्रगति को महिमा में बदलने से पहले रोका नहीं जा सकता।

A river continually fed by a living fountain may as soon end its streams before it come to the ocean, as a stop be put to the course and progress of grace before it issue in glory.

Some relate . . . that the eagle tries the eyes of her young by turning them to the sun; which if they cannot look steadily on, she rejects them as spurious. We may truly try our faith by immediate intuitions of the Sun of Righteousness. Direct faith to act itself, immediately and directly on the incarnation of Christ and His mediation; and if it be not the right kind and race, it will turn its eyes aside to anything else.

इस दिन को कल कल कहा गया था: कल को आज कल घोषित किया जाएगा: कल अभी आया नहीं है, बहुत दूर भी नहीं है, तो कल को क्या कहा जाएगा? आज।

This day was yesterday to-morrow nam'd: To-morrow shall be yesterday proclaimed: To-morrow not yet come, not far away, What shall to-morrow then be call'd? To-day.

भगवान हमसे जिस कर्तव्य की अपेक्षा करते हैं, वह हमारी अपनी ताक़त के बूँते पर नहीं होता। बल्कि, यह मसीह में हमें मिलने वाले संसाधनों के अनुपात में होता है। भगवान के छोटे से छोटे काम को भी पूरा करने की क्षमता हमारे भीतर नहीं है। यही अनुग्रह का नियम है। जब हम यह स्वीकार कर लेते हैं कि अपनी ताक़त से किसी कर्तव्य को पूरा करना हमारे लिए असंभव है, तभी हम उसे पूरा करने का रहस्य जान पाते हैं।

The duties God requires of us are not in proportion to the strength we possess in ourselves. Rather, they are proportional to the resources available to us in Christ. We do not have the ability in ourselves to accomplish the least of God's tasks. This is the law of grace. When we recognize it is impossible for us to perform a duty in our own strength, we will discover the secret of its accomplishment.

यदि हम प्रार्थना मेंलीन नहीं रहेंगे, तो हम प्रलोभन में पड़ जाएंगे।

If we do not abide in prayer, we will abide in temptation.

Satan's greatest success is in making people think they have plenty of time before they die to consider their eternal welfare.

The person who understands the evil in his own heart is the only person who is useful, fruitful, and solid in his beliefs and obedience. Others only delude themselves and thus upset families, churches, and all other relationships. In their self-pride and judgment of others, they show great inconsistency.

मेरी समझ से परे है कि कोई व्यक्ति सच्चा विश्वासी कैसे हो सकता है, जिसके लिए पाप सबसे बड़ा बोझ, दुख और मुसीबत न हो।

I do not understand how a man can be a true believer, in whom sin is not the greatest burden, sorrow and trouble.

पेड़-पौधों की वृद्धि इतनी धीमी गति से होती है कि वह आसानी से दिखाई नहीं देती। रोज़ाना हमें कोई खास बदलाव नज़र नहीं आता। लेकिन, समय बीतने के साथ हम देखते हैं कि एक बहुत बड़ा बदलाव आ चुका है। ऐसा ही अनुग्रह के साथ होता है। पवित्रता की ओर बढ़ना एक क्रमिक और आजीवन चलने वाली प्रक्रिया है (नीतिवचन 4:18)। यह ईश्वर के अनुग्रह का एक अद्भुत कार्य है और इसके लिए प्रार्थना की जानी चाहिए (रोमियों 8:27)।

The growth of trees and plants takes place so slowly that it is not easily seen. Daily we notice little change. But, in course of time, we see that a great change has taken place. So it is with grace. Sanctification is a progressive, lifelong work (Prov 4:18). It is an amazing work of God's grace and it is a work to be prayed for (Rom 8:27).

To those to whom Christ is the hope of future glory, he is also the life of present grace.

आप पिता को जो सबसे बड़ा दुख और बोझ दे सकते हैं, उनके साथ जो सबसे बड़ी बेरुखी कर सकते हैं, वह यह है कि आप यह विश्वास न करें कि वे आपसे प्रेम करते हैं।

The greatest sorrow and burden you can lay on the Father, the greatest unkindness you can do to him is not to believe that he loves you.

Let our hearts admit, “I am poor and weak. Satan is too subtle, too cunning, too powerful; he watches constantly for advantages over my soul. The world presses in upon me with all sorts of pressures, pleas, and pretences. My own corruption is violent, tumultuous, enticing, and entangling. As it conceives sin, it wars within me and against me. Occasions and opportunities for temptation are innumerable. No wonder I do not know how deeply involved I have been with sin. Therefore, on God alone will I rely for my keeping. I will continually look to Him.

मैं मसीह की महिमा को जितना अधिक देखता हूँ, इस दुनिया की बनावटी खूबसूरती मेरी नज़रों में उतनी ही फीकी पड़ती जाती है।

The more I see of the glory of Christ, the more the painted beauties of this world will wither in my eyes.

जब पवित्र आत्मा विश्वासियों को पवित्र करता है, तो वह उनमें एक पूरा काम करता है। वह उनके मन, इच्छा और हृदय में एक कृपामय, अलौकिक सिद्धांत स्थापित करता है जो उन्हें भगवान के अनुसार जीने की पवित्र इच्छा से भर देता है। पवित्रता का पूरा जीवन और अस्तित्व इसी में निहित है। यही नई सृष्टि है।

When the Holy Spirit sanctifies believers, he does a complete work in them. He puts into their minds, wills and hearts a gracious, supernatural principle which fills them with a holy desire to live to God. The whole life and being of holiness lies in this. This is the new creation.

जब भी हम यह कहते हैं कि हम पवित्र आत्मा में विश्वास करते हैं, तो हमारा मतलब होता है कि हम एक ऐसे जीवित भगवान में विश्वास करते हैं जो मनुष्य के व्यक्तित्व में प्रवेश करने और उसे बदलने में सक्षम भी है और इच्छुक भी।

Every time we say we believe in the Holy Spirit, we mean we believe that there is a living God able and willing to enter human personality and change it.

मसीह किसी शर्त पर नहीं मरे कि यदि वे विश्वास करें; बल्कि वह भगवान के सभी चुने हुए लोगों के लिए मरे, ताकि वे विश्वास कर सकें।

Christ did not die for any upon condition, if they do believe; but He died for all God's elect, that they should believe.

मसीह की मृत्यु के बिना पाप का अंत संभव नहीं है।

There is no death of sin without the death of Christ.

जब कोई व्यक्ति अपनी भावनाएं क्रूस और मसीह के प्रेम पर केंद्रित कर लेता है, तो वह इस दुनिया को एक मृत और बेकार चीज़ के रूप में ठुकरा देता है। पाप का आकर्षण फीका पड़ जाता है और गायब हो जाता है। अपनी भावनाओं को मसीह के क्रूस से भर लीजिए और आप पाएंगे कि पाप के लिए कोई जगह नहीं बची है।

When someone sets his affections upon the cross and the love of Christ, he crucifies the world as a dead and undesirable thing. The baits of sin lose their attraction and disappear. Fill your affections with the cross of Christ and you will find no room for sin.

हमें केवल उसी बात से परेशान नहीं होना चाहिए जो हमें परेशान करती है, बल्कि हर उस बात से होना चाहिए जो भगवान को परेशान करती है।

We must not be concerned only with that which troubles us, but with all that troubles God.

जैसे एक कोमल और प्यार करने वाला मित्र अपने दोस्त के रूखे व्यवहार से दुखी होता है... वैसे ही इस कोमल और प्यार करने वाली पवित्र आत्मा को दुख होता है, जिसने हमारे दिलों को अपना निवास स्थान चुना है।

As a tender and loving friend is grieved at the unkindness of his friend... so is it with this tender and loving Spirit, who hath chosen our hearts for a habitation to dwell in.

प्रलोभन और परिस्थितियाँ मनुष्य में कुछ नया नहीं डालतीं, बल्कि उसके भीतर जो पहले से छिपा है, उसे बाहर निकाल देती हैं।

Temptations and occasions put nothing into a man, but only draw out what was in him before.

जो व्यक्ति सही ढंग से प्रार्थना करता है, वह अपनी प्रार्थना के अनुरूप जीने का भी पूरा प्रयास करता है।

He who prays as he ought will endeavor to live as he prays.

जब तक हम इस बात से पूरी तरह आश्वस्त नहीं हो जाते कि यीशु मसीह के बिना हम परमेश्वर के अनन्त श्राप के अधीन हैं, और उनके सबसे बड़े शत्रुओं जैसे हैं, तब तक हम कभी भी शरण के लिए उनकी ओर नहीं भागेंगे।

Unless we are thoroughly convinced that without Christ we are under the eternal curse of God, as the worst of His enemies, we shall never flee to Him for refuge.

पाप से बीमार आत्माओं के लिए मसीह का लहू ही एकमात्र और सबसे महान अचूक औषधि है।

Christ's blood is the great sovereign remedy for sin-sick souls.

एक चरवाहे का पहला और मुख्य कर्तव्य है कि वह वचन का निष्ठापूर्वक प्रचार करके झुंड को आध्यात्मिक भोजन दे।

The first and principal duty of a pastor is to feed the flock by diligent preaching of the word

इस संसार में परमेश्वर का सबसे भयानक न्याय मनुष्य के दिलों का कठोर हो जाना है।

The most tremendous judgment of God in this world is the hardening of the hearts of men.

तेज़ हवाएँ और आंधियाँ फलदार पेड़ों को मज़बूत बनाती हैं। ठीक इसी प्रकार, बुराइयाँ और प्रलोभन अनुग्रह और पवित्रता को फलवंत बनाने में सहायता करते हैं। आंधी पेड़ की जड़ों के आस-पास की मिट्टी को ढीला कर देती है ताकि पेड़ अपनी जड़ें ज़मीन में और गहराई तक उतार सके, जहाँ उसे पोषण का नया भंडार मिलता है। लेकिन इसके बेहतर फल लगने में अभी काफी समय लगना बाकी होता है। इसी तरह, बुराइयाँ और प्रलोभन नम्रता, दीनता और पश्चाताप की जड़ों को गहराई तक विकसित करते हैं, जिससे उस अनुग्रह की खोज बढ़ती है जिससे पवित्रता मज़बूत होती है। हालांकि, बढ़ी हुई पवित्रता के दृश्यमान फल बाद में ही दिखाई देते हैं।

Great winds and storms help fruit-bearing trees. So also do corruptions and temptations help the fruitfulness of grace and holiness. The storm loosens the earth round its roots so the tree is able to get its roots deeper into the earth, where it receives fresh supplies of nourishment. But only much later will it be seen to bring forth better fruit. So corruptions and temptations develop the roots of humility, self-abasement and mourning in a deeper search for that grace by which holiness grows strong. But only later will there be visible fruits of increased holiness.

क्योंकि वह परमेश्वर है; यानी, इसलिए कि वह एक अनन्त रूप से महिमावान, उत्तम, ज्ञानी, पवित्र, शक्तिशाली, धर्मी, स्वयंभू, आत्मनिर्भर और सर्व-समर्थ सत्ता है; वह हर जीवन और अच्छाई का स्रोत और रचयिता है; वह सबका आदि कारण, अंतिम उद्देश्य और सर्वोपरि प्रभु है; इसलिए, उसकी आराधना की जानी चाहिए: इसलिए, हमें उसकी महिमा करनी चाहिए, उसे प्रणाम करना चाहिए, और उससे प्रेम करना चाहिए; उसकी स्तुति करनी चाहिए, उस पर भरोसा रखना चाहिए और उसका भय मानना चाहिए।

Because he is; that is, because he is an infinitely glorious, good, wise, holy, powerful, righteous, self-subsisting , self-sufficient , and all-sufficient being; the fountain and author of all being and good; the first cause, last end, and sovereign Lord of all; therefore, he is to be worshipped: therefore, are we to admire, adore, and love him; to praise, to trust and to fear him.

यदि कोई व्यक्ति उपदेश तो सीधे मार्ग का दे लेकिन खुद टेढ़े रास्तों पर चले, तो उसके जीवन की रात में उतनी चीज़ें ढह जाएंगी जितनी उसने अपने उपदेश के दिन में बनाई थीं।

If a man teach uprightly and walk crookedly, more will fall down in the night of his life than he built in the day of his doctrine.

A minister may fill his pews, his communion roll, the mouths of the public, but what that minister is on his knees in secret before God Almighty, that he is and no more.

See in the meantime that your faith brings forth obedience, and God in due time will cause it to bring forth peace.

The purpose of our holy and righteous God was to save his church, but their sin could not go unpunished. It was, therefore, necessary that the punishment for that sin be transferred from those who deserved it but could not bear it, to one who did not deserve it but was able to bear it.

The gospel shall be victorious. This is the third thing that greatly comforts and refreshes me, — that if God should give me the honour, the strength, and grace to die in this cause, my cause shall be victorious, as sure as if I had the crown in my hand.

यदि हम निरंतर प्रार्थना में बने नहीं रहते, तो हम प्रलोभन में ही पड़े रहेंगे। हमारी दैनिक मध्यस्थता का एक पहलू यह होना चाहिए: "हे परमेश्वर, मेरे प्राण की रक्षा कर, और मेरे हृदय तथा उसके सभी मार्गों को सुरक्षित रख ताकि मैं किसी उलझन में न फँसूँ।" जब यह बात हमारे जीवन में सच साबित होती है, तो कोई गुजरती हुई परीक्षा हमें हरा नहीं पाएगी। हम स्वतंत्र बने रहेंगे जबकि बाकी लोग गुलामी में जकड़े रहेंगे।

If we do not abide in prayer, we will abide in temptation. Let this be one aspect of our daily intercession: "God, preserve my soul, and keep my heart and all its ways so that I will not be entangled." When this is true in our lives, a passing temptation will not overcome us. We will remain free while others lie in bondage.

केवल आत्मा ही पाप को मार सकती है; ऐसा करने की प्रतिज्ञा उसी की है, और उसके बिना अन्य सभी उपाय खाली और व्यर्थ हैं। तब जिसके पास आत्मा नहीं है, वह पाप को कैसे मार सकता है? मनुष्य बिना आँखों के देखना और बिना जीभ के बोलना जितना आसान समझता है, उससे कहीं अधिक कठिन बिना आत्मा के किसी एक पाप को मारना है।

It is the Spirit alone that can mortify sin; he is promised to do it, and all other means without him are empty and vain. How shall he, then, mortify sin that has not the Spirit? A man may easier see without eyes, speak without a tongue, than truly mortify one sin without the Spirit.

हम मसीह से तब तक कोई शक्ति प्राप्त नहीं कर सकते जब तक हम इस गहरे विश्वास के साथ न जिएँ कि हमारे पास अपनी कोई शक्ति है ही नहीं।

We can have no power from Christ unless we live in a persuasion that we have none of our own.

सच्ची पवित्रता और सच्ची ईसाई आराधना की नींव सुसमाचार का सिद्धांत है, यानी वह जिसे हमें विश्वास करना चाहिए। इसलिए जब ईसाई सिद्धांतों की उपेक्षा की जाती है, उन्हें त्याग दिया जाता है या उनमें मिलावट कर दी जाती है, तो सच्ची पवित्रता और आराधना की भी उपेक्षा होती है, उन्हें भी त्याग दिया जाता है और उनमें भी मिलावट आ जाती है।

The foundation of true holiness and true Christian worship is the doctrine of the gospel, what we are to believe. So when Christian doctrine is neglected, forsaken, or corrupted, true holiness and worship will also be neglected, forsaken, and corrupted.

यद्यपि हमें 'स्वयं को धोने', 'अपने पापों से शुद्ध होने' और 'अपने सभी अधर्मों से खुद को पवित्र करने की' आज्ञा दी गई है, फिर भी यह सोचना कि हम अपने प्रयासों से ये सब कर सकते हैं, यीशु मसीह के क्रूस और अनुग्रह को पैरों तले कुचलने के समान है। परमेश्वर अपने अनुग्रह से जो कुछ भी हम में करता है, उसी को वह हमारे कर्तव्य के रूप में पूरा करने की आज्ञा देता है। परमेश्वर हम में और हमारे द्वारा सब कुछ सिद्ध करता है।

Though we are commanded to 'wash ourselves', to 'cleanse ourselves from sins', to 'purge ourselves from all our iniquities', yet to imagine that we can do these things by our own efforts is to trample on the cross and grace of Jesus Christ. Whatever God works in us by his grace, he commands us to do as our duty. God works all in us and by us.

हम पुराने नियम को पढ़ने से तब तक लाभ नहीं उठा सकते जब तक कि हम उसके पन्नों में मसीह की महिमा की तलाश न करें और उस पर मन न लगाएं।

We shall not benefit from reading the Old Testament unless we look for and meditate on the glory of Christ in its pages.

Christ is our best friend, and ere long will be our only friend. I pray God with all my heart that I may be weary of everything else but converse and communion with Him.

All that may be known of God for our salvation, especially his wisdom, love, goodness, grace and mercy on which the life of our souls depends, are represented to us in all their splendour in and through Christ. No wonder then that Christ is glorious in the eyes of believers!

हम ईश्वर के बारे में बहुत बातें करते हैं, उनके तौर-तरीकों, उनके कामों, उनकी योजनाओं के बारे में सारा-सारा दिन चर्चा कर सकते हैं; पर सच तो यह है कि हम उनके बारे में बहुत कम जानते हैं।

We speak much of God, can talk of him, his ways, his works, his counsels, all the day long; the truth is, we know very little of him.

Unless men see a beauty and delight in the worship of God, they will not do it willingly.

यह दावा करना कि मनुष्य अपनी आदतन पाप भरी जिंदगी जी सकते हैं, बिना इस बात के कि पवित्र आत्मा उनमें पाप का नाश करने का प्रयास करे और बिना पश्चाताप की किसी इच्छा के, दरअसल ईसाई धर्म को ही नकारना है।

For to pretend that men may live habitually sinful lives without any attempt by the Spirit to mortify sin in them, nor with any desire for repentance, is to deny the Christian religion.

मुझे लगता था कि मैं सब कुछ जानता हूँ; पर अब मैं यह स्वीकार करता हूँ कि जितना अधिक मैं जानता हूँ, उतना ही कम मैं जान पाता हूँ।

All things I thought I knew; but now confess The more I know, I know, I know the less.

हम सब यह दावा करते हैं कि हमारी मंजिल स्वर्ग, अमरत्व और महिमा है: पर क्या यह इस बात का कोई सबूत है कि हम सचमुच ऐसा चाहते हैं, जबकि हमारे सारे विचार इस दुनिया की उन तुच्छ चीज़ों में ही उलझे रहते हैं जिन्हें हमें यहीं छोड़कर जाना है, और ऊपर की चीज़ों के बारे में हमारे विचार कभी-कभार ही आते हैं?

We all profess that we are bound for heaven, immortality, and glory: but is it any evidence that we really design it if all our thoughts are consumed about the trifles of this world, which we must leave behind us, and have only occasional thoughts of things above?

हमारे आध्यात्मिक जीवन का जोश, शक्ति और सुकून शरीर की वासनाओं और कामों के नाश पर निर्भर करता है...सबसे श्रेष्ठ विश्वासी भी, जिन्हें निश्चित रूप से पाप की सजा देने वाली शक्ति से मुक्ति मिल चुकी है, उन्हें भी अपने पूरे जीवन यही प्रयास करना चाहिए कि वे अपने भीतर छिपी पाप की शक्ति का नाश करते रहें...क्या आप पाप का नाश करते हैं? क्या आप इसे अपना रोज का काम बनाते हैं? जब तक आप जीवित हैं, हमेशा इसी में लगे रहें; इस काम से एक दिन के लिए भी न चूकें; या तो आप पाप को मिटा दीजिए, वरना पाप आपको मिटा देगा।

The vigour, and power, and comfort of our spiritual life depends on the mortification of the deeds of the flesh...The choicest believers, who are assuredly freed from the condemning power of sin, ought yet to make it their business all their days to mortify the indwelling power of sin...Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it whilst you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you.

मसीह हमारी आत्माओं का भोजन, रोटी और आहार हैं। उनमें उनके प्रेम से बढ़कर आध्यात्मिक पोषण देने वाली कोई और चीज़ नहीं है, जिसकी लालसा हमें हमेशा रखनी चाहिए।

Christ is the meat, the bread, the food of our souls. Nothing is in him of a higher spiritual nourishment than his love, which we should always desire.

मैं अपने सारे विचार और इच्छाएँ मसीह की महिमा पर ही केंद्रित रखना चाहता हूँ, और मसीह की महिमा को मैं जितना अधिक देखता हूँ, इस दुनिया की बनावटी खूबसूरती मेरी नज़रों में उतनी ही फीकी पड़ती जाती है और मैं इस दुनिया के प्रति उतना ही अधिक क्रूस पर चढ़ता जाता हूँ। यह दुनिया मेरे लिए किसी मृत और सड़े हुए अवशेष जैसी बन जाएगी, जिसका आनंद लेना मेरे लिए असंभव होगा।

On Christ’s glory I would fix all my thoughts and desires, and the more I see of the glory of Christ, the more the painted beauties of this world will wither in my eyes and I will be more and more crucified to this world. It will become to me like something dead and putrid, impossible for me to enjoy.

जो इंसान अपनी मंडली के लिए प्रार्थना-कक्ष में समय बिताने से कहीं अधिक समय मंच पर उपदेश देने में बिताता है, वह महज एक नाममात्र का चौकीदार है।

He that is more frequent in his pulpit to his people than he is in his closet for his people, is but a sorry watchman.

यह विश्वास करना कि वह हमारी रक्षा करेंगे, वास्तव में हमारी रक्षा होने का एक साधन है। ईश्वर निश्चित रूप से हमारी रक्षा करेंगे और यदि हम कभी परीक्षा में पड़ भी जाएँ, तो उससे निकलने का कोई न कोई मार्ग हमारे लिए जरूर निकालेंगे। हमें उस बात के लिए प्रार्थना करनी चाहिए जिसका वादा ईश्वर पहले ही कर चुके हैं। हमारी प्रार्थनाएँ उनके वादों और आदेशों के अनुसार होनी चाहिए। आस्था उनके वादों को थाम लेती है और इस तरह राहत पाती है।

To believe that He will preserve us is, indeed, a means of preservation. God will certainly preserve us, and make a way of escape for us out of the temptation, should we fall. We are to pray for what God has already promised. Our requests are to be regulated by His promises and commands. Faith embraces the promises and so finds relief.

कृपा का कार्य होने से पहले हृदय 'पत्थर' जैसा होता है। यह ईश्वर को प्रसन्न करने के लिए उससे अधिक कुछ नहीं कर सकता जितना एक पत्थर कर सकता है।

Before the work of grace the heart is ‘stony.’ It can do no more than a stone can do to please God.

जो इंसान इस जीवन में आस्था के साथ मसीह की महिमा को किसी हद तक नहीं देखता, वह भविष्य में कभी भी अपनी आँखों से उनकी महिमा के दर्शन नहीं कर पाएगा।

No man shall ever behold the glory of Christ by sight hereafter who does not in some measure behold it here by faith.

कोई भी इंसान पाप से डरने का दिखावा न करे जो प्रलोभन से भी नहीं डरता! ये दोनों इतने घनिष्ठ रूप से जुड़े हैं कि इन्हें अलग नहीं किया जा सकता। जो व्यक्ति पेड़ की जड़ से प्रेम करता है, वह वास्तव में उसके फल से घृणा नहीं करता।

Let no man pretend to fear sin that does not fear temptation also! These two are too closely united to be separated. He does not truly hate the fruit who delights in the root.

There is a state of perfect peace with God to be attained under imperfect obedience.

It is truth alone that capacitates any soul to glorify God.

Consider who and what you are; who the Spirit is that is grieved, what he has done for you, what he comes to your soul about, what he has already done in you; and be ashamed. Among those who walk with God, there is no greater motive and incentive unto universal holiness, and the preserving of their hearts and spirits in all purity and cleanness than this: That the blessed Spirit, who has undertaken to dwell in them, is continually considering what they give entertainment in their hearts unto, and rejoices when his temple is kept undefiled.

क्षमा अकेले आत्मा के पास नहीं आती; या यों कहें कि मसीह केवल क्षमा लेकर आत्मा के पास नहीं आते! क्षमा तो वह द्वार है जिससे वे दरवाजा खोलकर प्रवेश करते हैं, पर वे जीवन और सामर्थ्य की आत्मा के साथ आते हैं।

Pardon comes not to the soul alone; or rather, Christ comes not to the soul with pardon only! It is that which He opens the door and enters by, but He comes with a Spirit of life and power.

ईश्वर द्वारा बाहर से प्रकट किए गए परम सत्यों के बिना, हम आचार-व्यवहार, न्याय, और सही-गलत के बारे में परस्पर विरोधी विचारों के उस समुद्र में बिना पतवार के रह जाते हैं, जो खुद को सर्वज्ञ समझने वाले ढेरों विचारकों से उपजे हैं।

Without absolutes revealed from without by God Himself, we are left rudderless in a sea of conflicting ideas about manners, justice and right and wrong, issuing from a multitude of self-opinionated thinkers.

It is evident that you contend against sin merely because of how it troubles you.

The root of an unmortified course is the digestion of sin without bitterness in the heart.

हम इस दुनिया में तब तक शांति का आनंद नहीं ले सकते जब तक हम मृत्यु के संबंध में ईश्वर की इच्छा के आगे झुकने को तैयार नहीं हो जाते। हमारा समय उनके हाथ में है, उनके सर्वोच्च अधिकार में है। हमें इसे ही सर्वोत्तम मानकर स्वीकार करना होगा।

We cannot enjoy peace in this world unless we are ready to yield to the will of God in respect of death. Our times are in His hand, at His sovereign disposal. We must accept that as best.

ईश्वर ने कभी यह नहीं चाहा कि हम केवल अपने दम पर प्रार्थना करते रहें। ईश्वर अपना उद्देश्य कभी नहीं बदलते, लेकिन वे अक्सर उद्देश्य में बदलाव अवश्य लाते हैं।

God never intended for us to be left to pray on our own. God never changes His purpose, but He often does purpose a change.

Sin will be always acting, if we be not always mortifying, we are lost creatures.

Christ greatly delights in his people and they greatly delight in him

That wisdom which cannot teach me that God is love, shall ever pass for folly.

शास्त्रों में जैसा दर्शाया गया है, मसीह के व्यक्तित्व की सुंदरता उन चीज़ों में निहित है जो शारीरिक आँखों से अदृश्य हैं। वे ऐसी हैं जिन्हें इंसान का कोई भी हाथ दर्शा नहीं सकता या उनकी छाया भी नहीं उतार सकता। केवल आस्था की आँख ही इस राजा को उसकी सुंदरता में देख सकती है। इसके अलावा और कौन उनके दिव्य स्वरूप की असीम महिमा पर मनन कर सकता है? क्या इंसान का हाथ एक ही व्यक्ति में उनके विभिन्न स्वरूपों के मिलन को दर्शा सकता है, जिसमें वे सबसे अधिक प्रिय लगते हैं? कौन सी आँख एक ही व्यक्ति में उनके भिन्न स्वरूपों के गुणों के परस्पर आदान-प्रदान को देख सकती है?

The beauty of the person of Christ, as represented in the Scripture, consists in things invisible unto the eyes of flesh. They are such as no hand of man can represent or shadow. It is the eye of faith alone that can see this King in his beauty. What else can contemplate on the untreated glories of his divine nature? Can the hand of man represent the union of his natures in the same person, wherein he is peculiarly amiable? What eye can discern the mutual communications of the properties of his different natures in the same person?

हमारे भटकावों से पुनर्जीवित होने और चंगा होने का केवल एक ही तरीका है ताकि हम बुढ़ापे में भी फलदायक बन सकें। हमें शास्त्र में दिखाए गए अनुसार मसीह के विशेष स्वरूप, उनकी कृपा और उनके कार्यों में निहित महिमा को निरंतर निहारना होगा।

There is only one way to be revived and healed from our backslidings so that we may become fruitful even in old age. We must take a steady look at the glory of Christ in His special character, in His grace and work, as shown to us in the Scripture.

पवित्र आत्मा जिस किसी व्यक्ति में या जिसके पक्ष में भी अपने पुनरुत्थान के लिए अपनी शक्ति का प्रयोग करते हैं या अपनी कृपा दिखाते हैं, वे सभी बाधाओं को दूर कर देते हैं, हर विरोध पर पार पा लेते हैं, और निश्चित रूप से अपने इच्छित परिणाम को उत्पन्न करते हैं।

In or towards whomsoever the Holy Spirit puts forth His power, or acts his grace for their regeneration, he removes all obstacles, overcomes all oppositions, and infallibly produces the intended effect.

क्या तुम अपनी वासनाओं और पापों का दमन करते हो? क्या यह तुम्हारा रोज का काम है? जब तक जीवित हो, इस काम में जुटे रहो; एक दिन के लिए भी इसे मत रोको। पाप को मार डालो, वरना वह तुम्हें मार डालेगा।

Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it whilst you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you.

पाप की सच्ची और उद्धार करने वाली समझ केवल प्रभु यीशु मसीह में ही मिल सकती है: उसी में हम हमारे अधर्म का वास्तविक परिणाम देख सकते हैं।

A true saving knowledge of sin is to be had only in the Lord Christ: in him may we see the desert of our iniquities.

पाप तब सबसे शांत प्रतीत नहीं होता, बल्कि असल में वह तभी सबसे अधिक सक्रिय होता है।

Sin is never less quiet than when it seems to be most quiet.

अपने पापों को मारने के लिए मसीह पर अपनी आस्था को पूरी दृढ़ता से काम में लाओ। उनका लहू पाप से बीमार पड़ी आत्माओं के लिए सबसे महान और अचूक औषधि है। इसी में अपना जीवन जियो, और तुम एक विजेता के रूप में इस दुनिया से विदा लोगे; हाँ, परमेश्वर की कृपा से तुम अपनी आँखों के सामने अपनी वासनाओं को मृत हुआ देखोगे।

Set faith at work on Christ for the killing of thy sin. His blood is the great sovereign remedy for sin-sick souls. Live in this, and thou wilt die a conqueror; yea, thou wilt, through the good providence of God, live to see thy lust dead at thy feet.

Sin also carries on its war by entangling the affections and drawing them into an alliance against the mind. Grace may be enthroned in the mind, but if sin controls the affections, it has seized a fort from which it will continually assault the soul. Hence, as we shall see, mortification is chiefly directed to take place upon the affections.

We need to attend diligently to the state of our soul, and to deal fervently and effectively with God about it.

परमेश्वर का इस दुनिया में करने के लिए एक काम है; और कठिनाइयों तथा उलझनों के कारण से उस काम से मुँह मोड़ लेना, असल में उनके अधिकार को ठुकरा देना है। केवल यह काफी नहीं है कि हम न्यायपूर्ण और धर्मी बनें, और परमेश्वर के साथ पवित्रता में चलें; बल्कि हमें दाऊद की तरह, अपनी नींद में जाने से पहले अपनी पीढ़ी की सेवा भी करनी चाहिए। परमेश्वर का एक काम है, और यदि हम उसमें उसकी सहायता नहीं करते, तो इसका अर्थ है कि हम उसका विरोध कर रहे हैं।

God hath work to do in this world; and to desert it because of its difficulties and entanglements, is to cast off His authority. It is not enough that we be just, that we be righteous, and walk with God in holiness; but we must also serve our generation, as David did before he fell asleep. God hath a work to do; and not to help Him is to oppose Him.

It is not the distance of the earth from the sun, nor the sun's withdrawing itself, that makes a dark and gloomy day; but the interposition of clouds and vaporous exhalations. Neither is thy soul beyond the reach of the promise, nor does God withdraw Himself; but the vapours of thy carnal, unbelieving heart do cloud thee.

There is not a day but sin foils or is foiled, prevails or is prevailed upon. It will always be so while we live in this world. Sin will not spare for one day. There is no safety but in a constant warfare for those who desire deliverance from sin's perplexing rebellion.

आंतरिक पाप हमेशा तब तक बना रहता है जब तक हम इस दुनिया में हैं; इसलिए इसका हमेशा दमन किया जाना चाहिए।

Indwelling sin always abides whilst we are in this world; therefore it is always to be mortified.

There are two things that are suited to humble the souls of men, and they are, first, a due consideration of God, and then of themselves - of God, in His greatness, glory, holiness, power, majesty, and authority; of ourselves, in our mean, abject, and sinful condition.

Steadfastness in believing doth not exclude all temptations from without. When we say a tree is firmly rooted, we do not say the wind never blows upon it.

पाप हमेशा अपनी पराकाष्ठा की ओर निशाना साधता है; जब भी वह प्रलोभन देने या लुभाने के लिए सिर उठाता है, अगर उसे अपनी मनमानी करने दी जाए तो वह उस श्रेणी के सबसे चरम पाप तक पहुँच जाएगा। हर अशुद्ध विचार या नज़र, अगर बस चले तो व्यभिचार बन जाएगी, अविश्वास का हर विचार, यदि उसे बढ़ने दिया जाए, तो नास्तिकता बन जाएगा। वासना का हर उभार, अगर उसे छूट मिल जाए, तो वह नीचता की हद पार कर जाता है; यह उस कब्र की तरह है जो कभी नहीं भरती। पाप की कपटपूर्णता इस बात में दिखती है कि वह अपनी शुरुआत की बातों में बहुत सीधा-साधा लगता है, लेकिन जब वह हावी हो जाता है, तो इंसानों के दिलों को पत्थर बना देता है और उन्हें बर्बादी की ओर ले जाता है।

Sin aims always at the utmost; every time it rises up to tempt or entice, if it has its own way it will go out to the utmost sin in that kind. Every unclean thought or glance would be adultery if it could, every thought of unbelief would be atheism if allowed to develop. Every rise of lust, if it has its way reaches the height of villainy; it is like the grave that is never satisfied. The deceitfulness of sin is seen in that it is modest in its first proposals but when it prevails it hardens men’s hearts, and brings them to ruin.

...but let it suffice us to know that it became God, who is the supreme Ruler, Governor and Judge of all that sin should be punished with death in the sinner or his surety; and therefore if God would bring many sons to glory, the Captain of their salvation must undergo sufferings and death, to make satisfaction for them.

हम क्या चाहते हैं? हम क्या हासिल करना चाहते हैं? हमारी आत्मा की क्या इच्छा है? क्या यह नहीं कि हम हमारे उद्धार और अनंत मुक्ति के लिए मसीह में प्रकट और महिमामंदित ईश्वर की बुद्धि, प्रेम, अनुग्रह, भलाई, पवित्रता, righteousness (धर्मपरायणता) और शक्ति को और अधिक पूरी, स्पष्ट और अटल रूप से समझ सकें?

What do we want? What would we be at? What do our souls desire? Is it not that we might have a more full, clear, stable comprehension of the wisdom, love, grace, goodness, holiness, righteousness, and power of God, as declared and exalted in Christ unto our redemption and eternal salvation?

लोग अपने पादरियों के जीवन में जो भी बुराइयाँ और कमियाँ देखते हैं, उन्हें उनके पुराने स्वभाव की उस बुराई से नहीं जोड़ेंगे जो अभी भी उनमें मौजूद है, बल्कि उन्हें सुसमाचार से जोड़ेंगे।

Whatever vices and corruptions men see in the lives of their ministers will not be attributed to the depravity of their old nature which still abides in them, but to the gospel.

विश्वासी मसीह की आज्ञा का पालन उस व्यक्ति के रूप में करते हैं जिसके माध्यम से हमारी आज्ञाकारिता को ईश्वर स्वीकार करते हैं। विश्वासी जानते हैं कि उनके सारे कर्तव्य कमज़ोर, अधूरे हैं और ईश्वर की उपस्थिति में टिकने के काबिल नहीं हैं। इसलिए वे मसीह को उस रूप में देखते हैं जो उनकी पवित्र चीज़ों के अधर्म को अपने ऊपर लेता है, उनकी प्रार्थनाओं में धूप मिलाता है, उनके कर्तव्यों से सारे खरपतवार चुनकर निकाल देता है और उन्हें ईश्वर के लिए स्वीकार्य बनाता है।

Believers obey Christ as the one whom our obedience is accepted by God. Believers know all their duties are weak, imperfect, and unable to abide in God's presence. Therefore they look to Christ as the one who bears the iniquity of their holy things, who adds incense to their prayers, gathers out all the weeds from their duties and makes them acceptable to God.

जब दिल एक बार ईश्वर में विश्राम करने के लिए, उस पर भरोसा रखने के लिए जीत लिया जाता है, तो वह निश्चित रूप से उसे संतुष्टि देगा। वह कभी भी उस पानी की तरह नहीं होगा जो धोखा दे; और न ही उसने कभी याकूब के वंश से यह कहा है, "तुम मेरा चेहरा व्यर्थ में तलाशो।" यदि मसीह को हमारी आपूर्ति की नींव के रूप में चुना गया है, तो वह हमें कभी निराश नहीं करेगा।

When the heart is once won to rest in God, to repose himself on him, he will assuredly satisfy it. He will never be as water that fails; nor hath he said at any time to the seed of Jacob, "Seek ye my face in vain." If Christ be chosen for the foundation of our supply, he will not fail us.

स्वर्ग के लिए किसी भी महान उपहार या विशेषाधिकार की तुलना में सबसे छोटा अनुग्रह भी अधिक सुरक्षित गारंटी है।

The least grace is a better security for heaven than the greatest gifts or privileges whatsoever.

अपनी इच्छाओं और अहंकार के खिलाफ आत्मा का ज़ोरदार विरोध ही शुद्धि है, जिसमें ईमानदारी सबसे साफ़ तौर पर झलकती है।

Mortification is the soul's vigorous opposition to self, wherein sincerity is most evident.

किसी मनुष्य द्वारा पवित्र शास्त्र के किसी भी हिस्से की व्याख्या करने का बीड़ा बिना ईश्वर का आह्वान किए उठाना, ताकि वह उनकी आत्मा द्वारा सिखाया और निर्देशित किया जा सके, ईश्वर को बहुत अधिक क्रोधित करना है; और न ही मैं ऐसे किसी व्यक्ति से सच्चाई के प्रकट होने की उम्मीद करता हूँ जो इस तरह गर्व के साथ ऐसे काम में हाथ डालता है जो उसकी क्षमता से बहुत बाहर है।

For a man solemnly to undertake the interpretation of any portion of Scripture without invocation of God, to be taught and instructed by His Spirit, is a high provocation of him; nor shall I expect the discovery of truth from any one who thus proudly engages in a work so much beyond his ability.
