But yet it is evident that religion consists so much in affection, as that without holy affection there is no true religion; and no light in the understanding is good which does not produce holy affection in the heart: no habit or principle in the heart is good which has no such exercise; and no external fruit is good which does not proceed from such exercises.

The bow of God's wrath is bent, and His arrows made ready upon the string. Justice points the arrow at your heart and strings the bow. It is nothing but the mere pleasure of God (and that of an angry God without any promise or obligation at all) that keeps the arrow one moment from being made drunk with your blood.

As it is with spiritual discoveries and affections given at first conversion, so it is in all subsequent illuminations and affections of that kind; they are all transforming. There is a like divine power and energy in them as in the first discoveries; they still reach the bottom of the heart, and affect and alter the very nature of the soul, in proportion to the degree in which they are given. And a transformation of nature is continued and carried on by them to the end of life, until it is brought to perfection in glory.

Religion consists much in holy affection; but those exercises of affection which are most distinguishing of true religion are these practical exercises. Friendship between earthly friends consists much in affection; but those strong exercises of affection that actually carry them through fire and water for each other are the highest evidences of true friendship.

There is, therefore, no difficulty in answering such questions as these. What cause was there why the Universe was placed in such a part of Space? and, Why was the Universe created at such a Time? for, if there be no Space beyond the Universe, it was impossible that it should be created in another place; and if there was no Time before, it was impossible it should be created at another time.

Almost all men, and those that seem to be very miserable, love life, because they cannot bear to lose sight of such a beautiful and lovely world. The ideas, that every moment whilst we live have a beauty that we take not distinct notice of, brings a pleasure that, when we come to the trial, we had rather live in much pain and misery than lose.

हम लोगों को अपने बारे में बताकर यह साबित नहीं करते कि हम ईसाई हैं। कहने भर को बातें आसान होती हैं। यह तो हमारी मंहगी, स्वार्थ-त्यागी ईसाई जीवन-शैली है जिससे हमारे विश्वास की सच्चाई साबित होती है।

It is not by telling people about ourselves that we demonstrate our Christianity. Words are cheap. It is by costly, self-denying Christian practice that we show the reality of our faith.

जब ईश्वर कोई महान और नया कार्य करने वाला होता है, तो वह हमेशा अपने लोगों को प्रार्थना में लगा देता है।

When God is about to do a mighty new thing He always sets His people praying.

ईश्वर ही किसी समझदार जीव के लिए सबसे परम हित हैं। उनका सान्निध्य ही हमारा सच्चा सुख है और एकमात्र वही संतोष है जो हमारी आत्मा को तृप्त कर सकता है। स्वर्ग जाकर ईश्वर का पूर्ण आनंद पाना, यहाँ के किसी भी सुखद साधन से अनंत गुना बेहतर है। यह माता-पिता, पति-पत्नी, बच्चों या किसी भी और सभी सांसारिक मित्रों की संगति से कहीं बढ़कर है। ये सब तो बस परछाइयाँ हैं; किंतु ईश्वर का सान्निध्य ही वास्तविक सत्य है। ये बिखरी हुई किरणें मात्र हैं, पर ईश्वर सूर्य हैं। ये केवल छोटी धाराएँ हैं, लेकिन ईश्वर अथाह स्रोत हैं। ये बस बूँदें हैं, पर ईश्वर महासागर हैं।

God is the highest good of the reasonable creature. The enjoyment of him is our proper; and is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Better than fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of any, or all earthly friends. These are but shadows; but the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the fountain. These are but drops, but God is the ocean.

A truly humble man is sensible of his natural distance from God; of his dependence on Him; of the insufficiency of his own power and wisdom; and that it is by God's power that he is upheld and provided for, and that he needs God's wisdom to lead and guide him, and His might to enable him to do what he ought to do for Him.

Remember that pride is the worst viper that is in the heart, the greatest disturber of the soul's peace and sweet communion with Christ; it was the first sin that ever was, and lies lowest in the foundation of Satan's whole building, and is the most difficultly rooted out, and is the most hidden, secret and deceitful of all lusts, and often creeps in, insensibly, into the midst of religion and sometimes under the disguise of humility.

Nature is God's greatest evangelist.

मसीह एक अन्य रूप में नदी के समान हैं। एक नदी निरंतर बहती रहती है, उसके उद्गम स्थल से पानी की नई धाराएँ लगातार आती रहती हैं, जिससे कोई भी व्यक्ति जीवन भर उस पर निर्भर रह सकता है और उसे जल मिलता रहता है। इसी प्रकार, मसीह एक सदा बहने वाला स्रोत हैं; वे निरंतर अपने लोगों को तृप्त कर रहे हैं, और वह स्रोत कभी खाली नहीं होता। जो मसीह पर निर्भर होकर जीते हैं, उन्हें अनंत काल तक उनसे निरंतर नया जीवन मिलता रहता है; वे ऐसे आनंद को पा सकते हैं जो हमेशा नया-न नया बना रहता है और जिसका कभी अंत नहीं होगा।

Christ is like a river in another respect. A river is continually flowing, there are fresh supplies of water coming from the fountain-head continually, so that a man may live by it, and be supplied with water all his life. So Christ is an ever-flowing fountain; he is continually supplying his people, and the fountain is not spent. They who live upon Christ, may have fresh supplies from him to all eternity; they may have an increase of blessedness that is new, and new still, and which never will come to an end.

It is God’s will through His wonderful grace, that the prayers of His saints should be one of the great principal means of carrying on the designs of Christ’s kingdom in the world. When God has something very great to accomplish for His church, it is His will that there should precede it the extraordinary prayers of His people; as is manifest by Ezekiel 36:37. and it is revealed that, when God is about to accomplish great things for His church, He will begin by remarkably pouring out the spirit of grace and supplication (see Zechariah 12:10).

In all your course, walk with God and follow Christ as a little, poor, helpless child, taking hold of Christ's hand, keeping your eye on the mark of the wounds on his hands and side, whence came the blood that cleanses you from sin and hiding your nakedness under the skirt of the white shining robe of his righteousness.

All truth is given by revelation, either general or special, and it must be received by reason. Reason is the God-given means for discovering the truth that God discloses, whether in his world or his Word. While God wants to reach the heart with truth, he does not bypass the mind.

The surest way to know our gold, is to look upon it and examine it in God's furnace, where he tries it that we may see what it is. If we have a mind to know whether a building stands strong or not, we must look upon it when the wind blows. If we would know whether a staff be strong, or a rotten, broken reed, we must observe it when it is leaned on and weight is borne upon it. If we would weigh ourselves justly we must weigh ourselves in God's scales that he makes use of to weigh us.

जिस व्यक्ति के पास केवल सैद्धांतिक ज्ञान और अटकलें हैं, और मन में कोई भावना नहीं है, वह कभी भी धर्म के कार्यों में संलिप्त नहीं होता।

He that has doctrinal knowledge and speculation only, without affection, never is engaged in the business of religion.

All the graces of Christianity always go together. They so go together that where there is one, there are all, and where one is wanting, all are wanting. Where there is faith, there are love, and hope, and humility; and where there is love, there is also trust; and where there is a holy trust in God, there is love to God; and where there is a gracious hope, there also is a holy fear of God.

सृष्टि का उद्देश्य यह है कि सृष्टि [परमेश्वर] की महिमा करे। अब परमेश्वर की महिमा करना क्या है, सिवाय इसके कि उसके द्वारा प्रकट की गई उस महिमा में आनंदित हुआ जाए?

The end of the creation is that the creation might glorify [God]. Now what is glorifying God, but a rejoicing at that glory he has displayed?

पाखंडी दो प्रकार के होते हैं: एक वे जो अपनी बाहरी नैतिकता और बाह्य धर्म से भ्रमित रहते हैं; और दूसरे वे जो झूठे अनुभवों और आत्म-प्रशंसा से धोखे में रहते हैं। ऐसे लोग अक्सर अच्छे कर्मों और इंसानों की अपनी नेकी को कमतर आंकते हैं, और स्वतंत्र कृपा (फ्री ग्रेस) की बहुत बातें करते हैं, लेकिन साथ ही वे अपने अनुभवों और अपनी दीनता को ही अपनी नेकी मान बैठते हैं और उनके घमंड में खुद को आसमान पर चढ़ा लेते हैं।

There are two sorts of hypocrites: ones that are deceived with their outward morality and external religion; and the others are those that are deceived with false discoveries and elevation; which often cry down works, and men's own righteousness, and tlak much of free grace, but at the same time make a righteousness of their discoveries and of their humiliation, and exalt themselves to heaven with them.

When God is about to bestow some great blessing on His church, it is often His manner, in the first place, so to order things in His providence as to show His church their great need of it, and to bring them into distress for want of it, and so put them upon crying earnestly to Him for it.

इसलिए शैतान की आत्मा तक पहुँचने, उसे परखने और भ्रमित करने, या उसके मन में कोई बात डालने की शक्ति केवल उसकी कल्पना के माध्यम से ही हो सकती है। और यही कारण प्रतीत होता है कि जो लोग मानसिक अवसाद (उदासी) की बीमारी से ग्रस्त होते हैं, वे अक्सर शैतान के विचारों और प्रलोभनों के प्रति इतने स्पष्ट रूप से और उल्लेखनीय रूप से संवेदनशील क्यों होते हैं... कल्पना में बाहरी विचारों को जगाकर मन को हर तरह के बुरे विचारों की ओर ले जाने के अनगिनत तरीके हैं।

So that it must be only by the imagination that Satan has access to the soul, to tempt and delude it, or suggest anything to it. And this seems to be the reason why persons that are under the disease of melancholy are commonly so visibly and remarkably subject to the suggestions and temptations of Satan... Innumerable are the ways by which the mind may be led on to all kind of evil thoughts, by the exciting of external ideas in the imagination.

Those who are in a state of salvation are to attribute it to sovereign grace alone, and to give all the praise to Him who maketh them to differ from others.

Grace is the seed of glory, the dawning of glory in the heart, and therefore grace is the earnest of the future inheritance.

इस बात से कौन इनकार करेगा कि सच्चा धर्म काफी हद तक आत्मा की इच्छा और प्रेरणा के जीवंत तथा ऊर्जावान कार्यों, या हृदय की तीव्र भावनाओं में निहित है? वह धर्म जिसे परमेश्वर चाहता है और जिसे वह स्वीकार करेगा, कमजोर, सुस्त और बेजान इच्छाओं में नहीं है, जो हमें उदासीनता की स्थिति से बस थोड़ा सा ही ऊपर उठाती हैं।

Who will deny that true religion consists, in a great measure, in vigorous and lively actings of the inclination and will of the soul, or the fervent exercises of the heart? That religion which God requires, and will accept, does not consist in weak, dull, and lifeless, wishes, raising us but a little above a state of indifference.
