प्रेम कभी भी वहाँ नहीं हो सकता जहाँ समानता और एकता न हो... और प्रेम वहाँ टिक नहीं सकता जहाँ वह समानता न तो खुद पाता है और न ही उसे स्थापित करने में लगा रहता है। समानता के बिना कोई सच्चा आनंद भी नहीं है। मानवीय समाज में समानता का अभ्यास कीजिए। सभी इंसानों को अपने जैसा प्यार करना, आदर देना और समझना सीखिए। किसी दूसरे के साथ चाहे कुछ भी हो—अच्छा हो या बुरा, दर्द हो या खुशी—उसे ऐसे महसूस कीजिए जैसे वह आपके साथ ही हुआ हो।

Love will never be anywhere except where equality and unity are..... And there can be no love where love does not find equality or is not busy creating equality. Nor is there any pleasure without equality. Practice equality in human society. Learn to love, esteem, consider all people like yourself. What happens to another, be it bad or good, pain or joy, ought to be as if it happened to you.

समझदारी इसी में है कि जो काम आपके सामने है, उसे पूरे दिल से करें और उसे करते हुए आनंद का अनुभव करें।

Wisdom consists in doing the next think you have to do, doing it with your whole heart, and finding delight in doing it.

इस पूरी कायनात में अगर ईश्वर जैसी कोई दूसरी चीज़ है, तो वह केवल 'मौन' है।

There is nothing so much like God in all the universe as silence.

संसार की चीज़ों से भरे होने का मतलब है—ईश्वर से खाली होना; और संसार की आसक्ति से खाली होने का अर्थ है—ईश्वर से परिपूर्ण होना।

To be full of things is to be empty of God; to be empty of things is to be full of God.

इस जीवन की सबसे बड़ी और श्रेष्ठ उपलब्धि यही है कि शांत रहा जाए और ईश्वर को अपने भीतर काम करने और बोलने दिया जाए। इसलिए कहा गया है: 'मौन की गहराइयों में ही मुझे वह गुप्त वचन सुनाई दिया था।'

The seed of God is in us: Pear seeds grow into pear trees; Hazel seeds into hazel trees; And God seeds into God.

God cannot know himself without me.

कुछ न करने की कीमत, गलती करने की कीमत से कहीं ज़्यादा चुकानी पड़ती है।

The price of inaction is far greater than the cost of making a mistake.

आत्मा की रचना समय और अनंतता (Eternity) के बीच के स्थान पर हुई है: अपनी सर्वोच्च शक्तियों से वह अनंतता को छूती है और अपनी निचली शक्तियों से समय को।

The soul is created in a place between Time and Eternity: with its highest powers it touches Eternity, with its lower Time.

He who would be serene and pure needs but one thing, detachment.

The more deeply we are our true selves, the less self is in us.

God expects but one thing of you, and that is that you should come out of yourself in so far as you are a created being made and let God be God in you.

People should not worry as much about what they do but rather about what they are. If they and their ways are good, then their deeds are radiant. If you are righteous, then what you do will also be righteous. We should not think that holiness is based on what we do but rather on what we are, for it is not our works which sanctify us but we who sanctify our works.

सब कुछ मिट जाने के लिए ही बना है, ताकि आत्मा अहंकार के बंधनों से पूरी तरह मुक्त होकर अपनी शुद्ध शून्यता में स्थित हो सके।

Everything is meant to be lost, that the soul may stand in unhampered nothingness

यदि आप खुद से प्रेम करते हैं, तो आप बाकी सभी से भी वैसे ही प्रेम करेंगे जैसे खुद से करते हैं। जब तक आप किसी अन्य व्यक्ति को खुद से कम प्रेम करते हैं, तब तक आप खुद से भी सच्चा प्रेम नहीं कर पाते; लेकिन जब आप हर किसी से एक जैसा प्रेम करते हैं, जिसमें आप खुद भी शामिल हैं, तो आप उन सबको एक ही इंसान के रूप में देखते हैं—और वह इंसान कोई और नहीं, बल्कि ईश्वर और मनुष्य दोनों ही है।

If you love yourself, you love everybody else as you do yourself. As long as you love another person less than you love yourself, you will not really succeed in loving yourself but if you love all alike, including yourself, you will love them as one person and that person is both God and man.

सच तो यह है कि अंधेरे में ही प्रकाश की प्राप्ति होती है, इसलिए जब हम सबसे गहरे दुखों में होते हैं, तब यह दिव्य प्रकाश हमारे सबसे करीब होता है।

Truly, it is in darkness that one finds the light, so when we are in sorrow, then this light is nearest of all to us.

Do exactly what you would do if you felt most secure.

ईश्वर आपसे सबसे अधिक जिस बात का आग्रह करते हैं, वह यह है कि आप अपने अहम् से बाहर निकल आएं... और ईश्वर को अपने भीतर पूरी तरह उतरने दें।

All that God asks you most pressingly is to go out of yourself … and let God be God in you

आप अपने हर काम से जितना अहंकार हटाते जाएंगे, ईश्वर उतने ही अधिक आपके कार्यों में उतरते चले जाएंगे—न कम, न ज़्यादा। इसकी शुरुआत यहीं से कीजिए, भले ही इसके लिए आपको अपनी पूरी ताक़त क्यों न लगानी पड़े। इसी रास्ते पर, और किसी अन्य तरीके से नहीं, सच्ची शांति मिल सकती है।

To the extent that you eliminate ego from your activities, God comes into them - but no more and no less. Begin with that, and let it cost you your uttermost. In this way, and no other, is true peace to be found.

जो लोग खुद के मोह और अहम् से पूरी तरह मुक्त हो चुके हैं, वे इतने पवित्र होते हैं कि यह संसार उन्हें कोई नुकसान नहीं पहुँचा सकता।

People who have let go of themselves are so pure that the world cannot harm them.

कोई भी इंसान, किसी भी पल, ईश्वर से कभी अलग या दूर नहीं होता।

Nobody at any time is cut off from God.

यीशु मंदिर में गए और वहाँ खरीद-बिक्री करने वालों को निडरता से बाहर खदेड़ दिया। और जब सब साफ़ हो गया, तो वहाँ यीशु के सिवाय कोई नहीं बचा। इस पर ध्यान दीजिए, क्योंकि हमारे साथ भी ऐसा ही होता है: जब वह अकेला होता है, तो वह आत्मा के मंदिर में बात कर सकता है। यदि आपके मन के मंदिर में कोई और बात कर रहा है, तो यीशु चुपचाप बैठे रहेंगे, मानो वे घर पर ही न हों। और वे हर उस जगह घर पर नहीं होते जहाँ अजनबी मेहमान हों - ऐसे मेहमान जिनसे आत्मा बातें करती है, ऐसे मेहमान जो मोल-भाव करने में लगे हैं। यदि यीशु को बोलना है और सुना जाना है, तो आत्मा को अकेला और शांत होना चाहिए।

Jesus went into the temple and boldly drove out those that bought and sold. And when all was cleared, there was nobody left but Jesus. Observe this, for it is the same with us: when he is alone he is able to speak in the temple of the soul. If anyone else is speaking in the temple of your soul, Jesus will keep still, as if he were not at home. And he is not at home wherever there are strange guests-guests with whom the soul holds conversation, guests who are seeking to bargain. If Jesus is to speak and be heard, the soul must be alone and quiet.

जो लोग ईश्वर में निवास करते हैं, वे शाश्वत वर्तमान में जीते हैं।

People who dwell in God dwell in the eternal now.

हर चीज़ में ईश्वर को पा लेना—यही आपके नए जन्म का प्रमाण है।

To grasp God in all things--this is the sign of your new birth.

जब आत्मा किसी अनुभव से गुजरना चाहती है, तो वह अपने सामने एक छवि गढ़ लेती है और फिर उसमें कदम रख देती है।

When the Soul wants to experience something she throws out an image in front of her and then steps into it.

मनुष्य को हमेशा इस बारे में ज़्यादा नहीं सोचना चाहिए कि उसे क्या करना चाहिए, बल्कि इस बात पर ध्यान देना चाहिए कि उसे क्या होना चाहिए। हमारे कर्म हमें महान नहीं बनाते; बल्कि हमें अपने कर्मों को महान बनाना चाहिए।

One must not always think so much about what one should do, but rather what one should be. Our works do not ennoble us; but we must ennoble our works.

Existence itself stands in need of nothing, for it lacks nothing, whereas everything else needs it, because outside of it there is nothing. Nothingness stands in need of existence, as a sick man lacks health and is in need. Health has no need of a sick man. To want nothing, therefore, characterizes the highest perfection, is fullest and purest existence.

If we seek God for our own good and profit, we are not seeking God.

What does God do all day long? He gives birth. From the beginning of eternity, God lies on a maternity bed giving birth to all. God is creating this whole universe full and entire in this present moment.

Our bodily food is changed into us, but our spiritual food changes us into it.

A pure heart is one that is unencumbered, unworried, uncommitted and which does not want its own way about anything but which, rather, is submerged in the loving will of God.

To be sure, our mental processes often go wrong, so that we imagine God to have gone away. What should be done then? Do exactly what you would do if you felt most secure. Learn to behave thus even in deepest distress and keep yourself that way in any and every estate of life. I can give you no better advice than to find God where you lost him.

मुझे कुछ देर के लिए शांत रहने की ज़रूरत है, मेरे दिल में नए संसार आकार ले रहे हैं।

I need to be silent for awhile, worlds are forming in my heart.

ईश्वर हम में से हर एक को एक धागे से पकड़े हुए हैं। जब हम पाप करते हैं, तो हम धागा काट देते हैं। लेकिन ईश्वर उसे फिर से बाँध देते हैं, और उसमें एक गाँठ लग जाती है। हर बार जब हमारी गलतियाँ धागे को काटती हैं, तो ईश्वर एक और गाँठ बाँध देते हैं और हमें अपनी ओर और करीब खींच लेते हैं।

God holds each of us by a string. When we sin, we cut the string. But God ties it up again, making a knot. Each time our wrongdoing cuts the string, God ties another knot drawing us up closer to Him.

God is like a person who clears his throat while hiding and so gives himself away. God lies in wait for us with nothing so much as love.

People should think less about what they ought to do and more about what they ought to be. If only their being were good, their works would shine forth brightly. Do not imagine that you can ground your salvation upon actions; it must rest on what you are.

प्रकृति का उद्देश्य न तो भोजन है, न पेय, न वस्त्र, न सुख-सुविधा, न ही ऐसी कोई भी चीज़ जिसमें ईश्वर को भुला दिया जाए। आप चाहें इसे पसंद करें या न करें, आप इसे जानें या न जानें, प्रकृति चुपके-चुपके उस मार्ग की तलाश करती है, उसे खंगालती है और उसका पता लगाने की कोशिश करती है जहाँ ईश्वर को पाया जा सके।

Nature's intent is neither food, nor drink, nor clothing, nor comfort, nor anything else in which God is left out. Whether you like it or not, whether you know it or not, secretly nature seeks, hunts, tries to ferret out the track on which God may be found.

लोगों को इस बात की चिंता कम करनी चाहिए कि वे क्या करते हैं, बल्कि इस बात पर ज़्यादा ध्यान देना चाहिए कि वे क्या हैं।

People should not worry so much about what they do but rather about what they are.

You may call God love, you may call God goodness. But the best name for God is compassion.

The man who has submitted his will and purposes entirely to God, carries God with him in all his works and in all circumstances.

My Lord told me a joke. And seeing Him laugh has done more for me than any scripture I will ever read.

When a man sees the one in all things, he is above mere understanding.

ज़रा देखिए कि वे लोग कैसे व्यापारी हैं जो बड़े पापों से तो बचते हैं और ईश्वर की प्रसन्नता के लिए अच्छे बनना चाहते हैं तथा उपवास, जागरण, प्रार्थना और इस तरह के तमाम अच्छे कर्म करना चाहते हैं। वे ये सब इसलिए करते हैं ताकि हमारे प्रभु उन्हें कुछ दें, या ताकि ईश्वर उनके मनमुताबिक कुछ करे। ये सभी लोग व्यापारी हैं।

Behold how all those people are merchants who shun great sins and would like to be good and do good deeds in God's honour, such as fasts, vigils, prayers, and similar good deeds of all kinds. They do all these things so that our Lord may give them something, or so that God may do something dear to them. All these people are merchants.

यह मत सोचिए कि पवित्रता किसी काम से आती है; यह इस बात पर निर्भर करती है कि इंसान भीतर से कैसा है। हम जिस तरह का काम करते हैं, वह हमें पवित्र नहीं बनाता, बल्कि हम अपने काम को पवित्र बना सकते हैं। कोई भी पुकार या पेशा चाहे कितना भी 'पवित्र' क्यों न हो, उसमें खुद को पवित्र बनाने की कोई शक्ति नहीं होती।

Do not think that saintliness comes from occupation; it depends rather on what one is. The kind of work we do does not make us holy but we may make it holy. However “sacred” a calling may be, as it is a calling, it has no power to sanctify.

यह बात बिल्कुल तय है: जब कोई मनुष्य परम आनंद की गहराई तक खुश होता है, तो उसे न तो अपनी सुध रहती है और न ही किसी और चीज़ की।

This much is certain: when a man is happy, happy to the core and root of beatitude, he is no longer conscious of himself or anything else.

मनुष्य को ध्यान (चिंतन) के द्वारा जो भी प्राप्ति हो, उसे प्रेम में लुटा देना चाहिए।

That which a man acquires by contemplation he should spend in love.

मनุष्य को अपनी इच्छा और अपने सभी कर्मों को ईश्वर की ओर केंद्रित करना चाहिए और केवल ईश्वर को ध्यान में रखकर बिना किसी डर के आगे बढ़ना चाहिए, यह सोचे बिना कि मैं सही हूँ या गलत? जो इंसान अपनी पहली लड़ाई लड़ने से पहले हरसंभव परिणाम के बारे में सोचने बैठे, वह कभी लड़ाई लड़ ही नहीं पाएगा। और अगर कहीं जाते वक्त हम यह सोचने लगें कि अपना आगे वाला पाँव कैसे रखना है, तो हम कभी अपनी मंज़िल तक नहीं पहुँच पाएंगे। हमारा कर्तव्य है कि बस अगला काम करें और सीधे आगे बढ़ते जाएँ, यही सही रास्ता है।

A man should orient his will and all his works to God and having only God in view go forward unafraid, not thinking, am I right or am I wrong? One who worked out all the chances before starting his first fight would never fight at all. And if, going to someplace, we must think how to set the front foot down, we shall never get there. It is our duty to do the next thing: go straight on, that is the right way.

The seed of God is in us. If the seed had a good, wise and industrious cultivator, it would thrive all the more and grow up to God whose seed it is, and the fruit would be equal to the nature of God. Now the seed of a pear tree grows into a pear tree, a hazel seed into a hazel tree, and the seed of God into God.

Some people want to see God with their eyes as they see a cow, and to love Him as they love a cow - for the milk and cheese and profit it brings them. This is how it is with people who love God for the sake of outward wealth or inward comfort. They do not rightly love God, when they love Him for their own advantage.

Saint Augustine cries, Lord I cannot love you, but come in and love yourself in me. According to Saint Paul, we must put off our own natural form and put on the form of God, and Saint Augustine tells us to discard our own mode of nature; then the divine nature will flow in and be revealed. Saint Augustine says, Those who seek and find, find not. He who seeks and finds not, he alone finds. Saint Paul says, What I was, was not I, it was God in me.

Philosophers say the Soul is double-faced, her upper face gazes at God all the time and her lower face looks somewhat down, informing the senses; and the upper face, which is the summit of the soul, is in eternity and has nothing to do with time: it knows nothing of time or of body.

समय वह है जो प्रकाश को हम तक पहुँचने से रोकता है। ईश्वर के मार्ग में समय से बड़ी कोई बाधा नहीं है; और न केवल समय बल्कि सांसारिक वस्तुएँ, न केवल सांसारिक वस्तुएँ बल्कि सांसारिक मोह, न केवल सांसारिक मोह बल्कि समय का अपना दाग और उसकी गंध भी।

Time is what keeps the light from reaching us. There is no greater obstacle to God than time: and not only time but temporalities, not only temporal things but temporal affections, not only temporal affections but the very taint and smell of time.

It is a fair trade and an equal exchange: to the extent that you depart from things, thus far, no more and no less, God enters into you with all that is his, as far as you have stripped yourself of yourself in all things. It is here that you should begin, whatever the cost, for it is here that you will find true peace, and nowhere else.

I have sought earnestly and with great diligence that good and high virtue by which man may draw closest to God... and as far as my intelligence would permit, I find that high virtue to be pure disinterest, that is, detachment from creatures. Our Lord said to Martha 'Unum est necessarium', which is to say; to be untroubled and pure, one thing is necessary and that is disinterest.

जिस किसी के पास भी ईश्वर सच्चे साथी के रूप में हैं, वह हर जगह उनके साथ रहता है, चाहे वह सड़कों पर हो, लोगों के बीच हो, चर्च में हो, या मरुस्थल में या किसी मठ की कोठरी में हो... ऐसा क्यों है? ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि ऐसे व्यक्ति के पास केवल ईश्वर होते हैं, उनकी नज़रें लगातार ईश्वर पर टिकी रहती हैं, और इस प्रकार उसके लिए सभी चीज़ें ईश्वर बन जाती हैं। ऐसे लोग अपने हर काम में और जहाँ भी वे जाते हैं, एक ईश्वर की तरह होते हैं, और केवल ईश्वर ही उनके सभी कार्यों के सूत्रधार होते हैं।

Whoever has God truly as a companion, is with him in all places, both on the streets, and among people, as well as in church, or in the desert or in a monastic cell...Why is this so? It is so because such a person possesses God alone, keeping their gaze fixed upon God, and thus all things become God for him or her. Such people be a God in all their deeds and in all the places they go, and it is God alone who is the author of all their deeds.

The moral task of man is a process of spiritualization. All creatures are go-betweens, and we are placed in time that by diligence in spiritual business we may grow liker and nearer to God. The aim of man is beyond the temporal - in the serene region of the everlasting Present.

Know that when you seek anything of your own, you will never find God, because you do not seek God purely. You are seeking something along with God, and you are acting just as if you were to make a candle out of God in order to look for something with it. Once one finds the things one is looking for, one throws the candle away. This is what you are doing.

A question arises regarding the angels who dwell with us, serve us and protect us, whether their joys are equal to those of the angels in heaven, or whether they are diminished by the fact that they protect and serve us. No, they are certainly not; for the work of the angels is the will of God, and the will of God is the work of the angels; their service to us does not hinder their joy nor their working. If God told an angel to go to a tree and pluck caterpillars off it, the angel would be quite ready to do so, and it would be his happiness, if it were the will of God.

The soul loves the body. And consider too how it is that the body is more in the soul than the soul is in the body.

इस जीवन में रुकने का कोई ठिकाना नहीं है—और न ही यह किसी के लिए कभी रुकता है, चाहे कोई इस मार्ग पर कितना भी आगे क्यों न निकल गया हो।

There is no stopping place in this life--nor is there ever one for any person, no matter how far along the way one's gone.

What our Lord did was done with the intent, and this alone, that he might be with us and we with him.

Therefore, look only for this fishhook, and you will be happily caught. The more you are caught, the more you will be liberated.

God must act and pour himself into you the moment he finds you ready. Don't imagine that God can be compared to an earthly carpenter, who acts or doesn't act, as he wishes; who can will to do something or leave it undone, according to his pleasure. It is not that way with God: where and when God finds you ready, he must act and overflow into you, just as when the air is clear and pure, the sun must overflow into it and cannot refrain from doing that.

Man goes far away or near but God never goes far-off; he is always standing close at hand, and even if he cannot stay within he goes no further than the door.

It is permissible to take life's blessings with both hands provided thou dost know thyself prepared in the opposite event to take them just as gladly. This applies to food and friends and kindred, to anything God gives and takes away... As long as God is satisfied do thou rest content. If he is pleased to want something else of thee, still rest content.

हमारे प्रभु के पीछे आधा रास्ता तय करने वाले तो बहुत मिल जाएंगे, लेकिन पूरा रास्ता तय करने वाला कोई नहीं। वे अपनी संपत्ति, मित्र और सम्मान त्यागने को तैयार हो जाएंगे, लेकिन खुद को मिटाना उन्हें बहुत चुभता है।

There are plenty to follow our Lord half-way, but not the other half. They will give up possessions, friends and honors, but it touches them to closely to disown themselves.

If I say that God is good, that is not true. God is not good. I am good, and if I say that God is wise, that is not true. I am wiser than he is.

If I had a friend and loved him because of the benefits which this brought me and because of getting my own way, then it would not be my friend that I loved but myself. I should love my friend on account of his own goodness and virtues and account of all that he is in himself. Only if I love my friend in this way do I love him properly.

My children, mark me. I pray you. Know! God loves my soul so much that his very life and being depend upon his loving me, whether he would or no. To stop God loving me would be to rob him of his Godhood; for God is love no less than he is truth; as he is good, so is he love as well. It is the absolute truth, as God lives... If anyone would ask me what God is, I should answer: God is love, and so altogether lovely that creatures all with one accord essay to love his loveliness, whether they do so knowingly or unbeknownst, in joy or sorrow.

Above thought is the intellect, which still seeks: it goes about looking, spies out here and there, picks up and drops. But above the intellect that seeks is another intellect which does not seek but stays in its pure, simple being, which is embraced in that light.
