One reason we can hardly bear to remain silent is that it makes us feel so helpless. We are so accustomed to relying upon words to manage and control others. If we are silent, who will take control? God will take control, but we will never let him take control until we trust him. Silence is intimately related to trust.

If worship does not change us it has not been worship.

To pray is to change. This is a great grace. How good of God to provide a path whereby our lives can be taken over by love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and self-control.

Whenever the Christian idea of meditation is taken seriously, there are those who assume it is synonymous with the concept of meditation centered in Eastern religions. In reality, the two ideas stand worlds apart. Eastern meditation is an attempt to empty the mind; Christian meditation is an attempt to fill the mind. The two ideas are quite different.

हमारा ईश्वर पत्थर का नहीं बना है। उसका हृदय सभी में सबसे अधिक संवेदनशील और कोमल है। उसका कोई भी काम अनदेखा नहीं जाता, चाहे वह कितना भी छोटा या मामूली क्यों न हो। एक घूंट ठंडा पानी भी ईश्वर की आँखों में आँसू लाने के लिए काफ़ी है। ईश्वर हमारी कृतज्ञता के छोटे-छोटे प्रयासों का भी जश्न मनाते हैं।

Our God is not made of stone. His heart is the most sensitive and tender of all. No act goes unnoticed, no matter how insignificant or small. A cup of cold water is enough to put tears in the eyes of God. God celebrates our feeble expressions of gratitude.

The fruit of solitude is increased sensitivity and compassion for others. There comes a new freedom to be with people. There is new attentiveness to their needs, new responsiveness to their hurts. Thomas Merton observes, 'It is in deep solitude that I find the gentleness with which I can truly love my brothers. The more solitary I am the more affection I have for them.... Solitude and silence teach me to love my brothers for what they are, not for what they say.

We really must understand that the lust for affluence in contemporary society is psychotic. It is psychotic because it has completely lost touch with reality. We crave things we neither need nor enjoy. We buy things we do not want to impress people we do not like.

A farmer is helpless to grow grain; all he can do is provide the right conditions for the growing of grain. He cultivates the ground, he plants the seed, he waters the plants, and then the natural forces of the earth take over and up comes the grain...This is the way it is with the Spiritual Disciplines - they are a way of sowing to the Spirit... By themselves the Spiritual Disciplines can do nothing; they can only get us to the place where something can be done.

Stop trying to impress people with your clothes and impress them with your life.

The needed change within us is God's work, not ours. The demand is for an inside job, and only God can work from the inside. We cannot attain or earn this righteousness of the kingdom of God: it is a grace that is given.

सच तो यह है कि हम सभी तमाम तरह की मिली-जुली भावनाओं—निस्वार्थ और स्वार्थी, परोपकारी और द्वेषपूर्ण, प्रेम और कड़वाहट से भरी प्रेरणाओं के साथ प्रार्थना करने बैठते हैं। सच कहें तो, इस जीवन में हम कभी भी अच्छाई को बुराई से और पवित्रता को अपवित्रता से पूरी तरह अलग नहीं कर पाएंगे। लेकिन ईश्वर इतने विशाल हैं कि वे इन तमाम उलझनों और मिलावट के बावजूद हमें स्वीकार कर लेते हैं।

The truth of the matter is, we all come to prayer with a tangled mass of motives altruistic and selfish, merciful and hateful, loving and bitter. Frankly, this side of eternity we will never unravel the good from the bad, the pure from the impure. God is big enough to receive us with all our mixture.

बच्चों के लिए अपने माता-पिता से बात करना न तो मुश्किल होता है और न ही जटिल, और न ही अपनी किसी छोटी-सी ज़रूरत को उनके सामने रखते हुए उन्हें झिझक महसूस होती है। ठीक वैसे ही हमें भी अपनी साधारण-सी प्रार्थनाओं को बिना किसी संकोच के पूरे भरोसे के साथ अपने परमपिता के सामने रखना चाहिए।

Children do not find it difficult or complicated to talk to their parents, nor do they feel embarrassed to bring the simplest need to their attention. Neither should we hesitate to bring the simplest requests confidently to the Father.

शरीर की बेलगाम इच्छाओं को सेवा से बढ़कर कोई और चीज़ अनुशासन में नहीं लाती, और छिपकर सेवा करने से बढ़कर शरीर की लालसाओं को कोई और चीज़ नहीं बदलती। शरीर सेवा के नाम पर आनाकानी करता है, लेकिन चुपचाप और गुप्त रूप से सेवा करने पर वह चीख उठता है। वह मान-सम्मान और प्रशंसा पाने के लिए छटपटाता है। वह ऐसे बारीक और धार्मिक रूप से स्वीकार्य तरीके ढूँढ निकालता है जिससे उसकी की गई सेवा पर सबका ध्यान जाए। अगर हम शरीर की इस हवस के आगे झुकने से दृढ़ता से इनकार कर देते हैं, तो हम उसका दमन कर देते हैं। जब-जब हम अपने शरीर की इस लालसा को कुचलते हैं, तब-तब हम अपने अहंकार और घमंड को मिटा देते हैं।

Nothing disciplines the inordinate desires of the flesh like service, and nothing transforms the desires of the flesh like serving in hiddenness. The flesh whines against service but screams against hidden service. It strains and pulls for honour and recognition. It will devise subtle, religiously acceptable means to call attention to the service rendered. If we stoutly refuse to give in to this lust of the flesh, we crucify it. Every time we crucify the flesh, we crucify our pride and arrogance.

अगर हमें लगता है कि सिर्फ प्रार्थना करने और भजन गाने से ही हमें हमेशा खुशी मिलेगी, तो हम भ्रम में हैं। लेकिन अगर हम अपने जीवन को छोटी-छोटी अच्छी चीज़ों से भर लें और लगातार उनके लिए ईश्वर को धन्यवाद दें, तो हम वाकई आनंदित रहेंगे, यानी भीतर से पूरी तरह खुश रहेंगे।

If we think we will have joy only by praying and singing psalms, we will be disillusioned. But if we fill our lives with simple good things and constantly thank God for them, we will be joyful, that is, full of joy.

प्रार्थना केवल शब्दों में व्यक्त किए गए विचारों और भावनाओं का नाम नहीं है। यह हमारे मन और हृदय—यानी हमारे पूरे वजूद को हमारे परमपिता परमेश्वर के सामने खोल देने का नाम है। यह उस दिव्य मिलन का नाम है।

Prayer is more than thoughts and feelings expressed in words. It is the opening of mind and heart - our whole being to God our Abba Father. It is Divine Union.

ईसा मसीह और नए नियम के सभी लेखक हमें धन-दौलत की इस अंधी हवस से आज़ाद होने और आनंद से भरे भरोसे के साथ जीने का आह्वान करते हैं... वे हमें एक ऐसी जीवनशैली की ओर ले जाते हैं जहाँ हमारे पास जो कुछ भी है उसे हम एक उपहार के रूप में स्वीकार करते हैं, जहाँ हमारी हर ज़रूरत की देखभाल ईश्वर द्वारा की जाती है, और जहाँ सही समय आने पर हमारा सब कुछ दूसरों की भलाई के लिए उपलब्ध होता है। यही सच्चाई ईसाई सादगी के दिल की धड़कन है। यह सही काम करने और डर तथा लालच की ताकतों पर जीत हासिल करने की मुक्ति और शक्ति का साधन है।

Jesus Christ and all the writers of the New Testament call us to break free of mammon lust and live in joyous trust...They point us toward a way of living in which everything we have we receive as a gift, and everything we have is cared for by God, and everything we have is available to others when it is right and good. This reality frames the heart of Christian simplicity. It is the means of liberation and power to do what is right and to overcome the forces of fear and avarice.

सादगी ही वह एकमात्र उपाय है जो हमारे जीवन को इस तरह से फिर से व्यवस्थित करती है कि हम बिना खुद को बर्बाद किए अपनी संपत्ति का सच्चा आनंद उठा सकें।

Simplicity is the only thing that sufficiently reorients our lives so that possessions can be genuinely enjoyed without destroying us.

Forms and rituals do not produce worship, nor does the disuse of forms and rituals. We can use all the right techniques and methods, we can have the best possible liturgy, but we have not worshiped the Lord until Spirit touches spirit.

Overconsumption is a "cancer eating away at our spiritual vitals." It cuts the heart right out of our compassion. It distances us from the great masses of broken bleeding humanity. It converts us into materialists. We become less able to ask moral questions. For example, just because we have the economic muscle to buy up vast amounts of the world's oil, does that give us the right to do so? When the poor farmer of India is unable to buy a gallon of gasoline to run his simple water pump because the world's demand has priced him out of the market, who is to blame?

प्रसन्न और उदार हृदय से दान देने से हमारे भीतर बैठा वह पुराना कंजूस स्वभाव बाहर निकल जाता है। गरीबों को भी यह जानने की जरूरत है कि वे भी दे सकते हैं। पैसे या किसी अन्य कीमती वस्तु को छोड़ने मात्र का कार्य हमारे भीतर कुछ ऐसा कर जाता है जो लालच रूपी दानव का नाश कर देता है।

Giving with glad and generous hearts has a way of routing out the tough old miser within us. Even the poor need to know that they can give. Just the very act of letting go of money, or some other treasure, does something within us. It destroys the demon greed.

ऐसी हर चीज़ को त्याग दें जो आपके भीतर किसी प्रकार की लत पैदा कर रही है।

Worship is our response to the overtures of love from the heart of the Father. Its central reality is found 'in spirit and truth.' It is kindled within us only when the Spirit of God touches our human spirit.

Love, not anger, brought Jesus to the cross. Golgotha came as a result of God's great desire to forgive, not his reluctance. Jesus knew that by his vicarious suffering he could actually absorb all the evil of humanity and so heal it, forgive it, redeem it.

Our problem is that we assume prayer is something to master the way we master algebra or auto mechanics. But when praying, we come "underneath," where we calmly and deliberately surrender control and become incompetent.

Overpopulation is the problem of the third and fourth World; over-consumption is the problem of the West. The average American child this year will consume as much of the world's resources as twenty children born in India. Deliberate and calculated waste is the central aspect of the American economy. We over-eat, over-buy, and over-built, spewing out our toxic wastes upon the earth and into the air.

लेकिन अगर हम यह जानते हैं कि परमेश्वर के लोग सबसे पहले पापियों का एक समुदाय हैं, तो हम परमेश्वर के प्रेम के अछूते बुलावे को सुनने के लिए और अपने भाइयों और बहनों के सामने अपनी जरूरतों को खुले तौर पर स्वीकार करने के लिए स्वतंत्र हो जाते हैं। जो डर और अहंकार हमसे चिपक जाता है, जैसे समुद्री जीव चट्टानों से चिपक जाते हैं, वही दूसरों से भी चिपका रहता है। एक-दूसरे के सामने अपनी कमियों को स्वीकार करने के कार्यों में हम उस शक्ति को मुक्त करते हैं जो चंगाई देती है। हमारी मानवता को नकारा नहीं जाता, बल्कि उसका रूपांतरण हो जाता है।

But if we know that the people of God are first a fellowship of sinners, we are freed to hear the unconditional call of God's love and to confess our needs openly before our brothers and sisters. The fear and pride that clings to us like barnacles cling to others also. In acts of mutual confession we release the power that heals. Our humanity is no longer denied, but transformed.

In intellectual honesty, we should be willing to study and explore the spiritual life with all the rigor and determination we would give to any field of research.

Worship is our response to the overtures of love from the heart of the Father.

इसलिए मैं आपसे आग्रह करता हूँ: जीवन की रोजमर्रा की छोटी-छोटी बातों पर परमेश्वर के साथ निरंतर बातचीत करते रहिए, बिल्कुल वैसे ही जैसे 'फिडर ऑन द रूफ' नाटक में टेविए करता है। फिलहाल, "उचित" तरीके से प्रार्थना करने की चिंता मत कीजिए, बस परमेश्वर से खुलकर बातें कीजिए।

And so I urge you: carry on an ongoing conversation with God about the daily stuff of life, a little like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. For now, do not worry about "proper" praying, just talk to God.

यीशु हमें याद दिलाते हैं कि प्रार्थना कुछ-कुछ बच्चों के अपने माता-पिता के पास आने जैसी है। हमारे बच्चे कई बार हमारे पास ऐसी अजीबोगरीब मांगें लेकर आते हैं! अक्सर हम उनकी मांगों में छिपे स्वार्थ और ओछी बातों से दुखी होते हैं, लेकिन अगर वे अपनी इन स्वार्थी और ओछी बातों के साथ भी कभी हमारे पास न आएं, तो हमें उससे भी कहीं ज्यादा दुख होगा। हम तो बस इस बात से खुश होते हैं कि वे हमारे पास आते हैं - अपने मिले-जुले इरादों के साथ ही सही।

Jesus reminds us that prayer is a little like children coming to their parents. Our children come to us with the craziest requests at times! Often we are grieved by the meanness and selfishness in their requests, but we would be all the more grieved if they never came to us even with their meanness and selfishness. We are simply glad that they do come--mixed motives and all.

अगर हम सच में लोगों से प्रेम करते हैं, तो हम उनके लिए उस सीमा से भी आगे की इच्छा रखेंगे जो देने की हमारी शक्ति में है, और यही चीज़ हमें प्रार्थना की ओर ले जाती है।

If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than it is within our power to give them, and this leads us to prayer.

अनगिनत लोग अपनी समझ से कहीं ज़्यादा प्रार्थना करते हैं। अक्सर प्रार्थना को लेकर उनके मन में 'रंगीन शीशों' जैसी एक ऐसी काल्पनिक और पवित्र छवि होती है कि वे अपने अनुभव को प्रार्थना के रूप में पहचान ही नहीं पाते और प्रार्थना न करने के लिए खुद को ही दोषी ठहराते रहते हैं।

Countless people pray far more than they know. Often they have such a "stained-glass" image of prayer that they fail to recognize what they are experiencing as prayer and so condemn themselves for not praying.

आराधना के दौरान हृदय के पवित्र स्थल में एक अज्ञात शक्ति समा जाती है, और आत्मा में करुणा बढ़ने लगती है। आराधना का अर्थ ही बदलना है।

In worship an increased power steals its way into the heart sanctuary, an increased compassion grows in the soul. To worship is to change.

In our day heaven and earth are on tiptoe waiting for the emerging of the Spirit-led, Spirit-intoxicaed, Spirit-empowered peole. All of creation watches expectantly for the springing up of a disciplined, freely gathered, martyr people who know in this likfe the life and power of the Kindgom of God. It happened before, it can happen again.

As worship begins in holy expectancy, it ends in holy obedience. Holy obedience saves worship from becoming an opiate, an escape from the pressing needs of modern life.

There is an old proverb to the effect that 'all those who open their mouths, close their eyes!' The purpose of silence and solitude is to be able to see and hear. Control rather than no noise is the key to silence. James saw clearly that the person who could control his tounge is perfect (James 3:1-12). Under the Discipline of silence and solitude we learn when to speak and when to refrain from speaking.
