Make friends with the angels, who though invisible are always with you. Often invoke them, constantly praise them, and make good use of their help and assistance in all your temporal and spiritual affairs.

सबसे बुरी प्रवृत्तियों में से एक वह है जो हर बात पर ताने कसती है और हर चीज़ का मज़ाक उड़ाती है। ईश्वर इस दुर्गुण से घृणा करते हैं और कई बार इसके लिए कड़ा दंड भी देते हैं।

One of the most evil dispositions possible is that which satirizes and turns everything to ridicule. God abhors this vice, and has sometimes punished it in a marked manner

बिना किसी अपवाद के हर चीज़ में ईश्वर को देखने का प्रयास करें। खुद को घुटन में न डालें... यदि आप ढेरों चिंताओं, इच्छाओं और उम्मीदों के बोझ से खुद का दम घोंटने लगेंगे... तो आप पूरे मन से ईश्वर की सेवा करने में असमर्थ हो जाएंगे।

Strive to see God in all things without exception. Do not smother yourself...If you start smothering yourself with a host of cares and longings and wishes ... you will be disabling yourself from serving God with all your heart.

Let is walk ... joyously, dear souls, among the difficulties of this passing life ... These pains will have an end when our life ends, after which there will be only joy, only contentment, only eternal consolation.

The highest point of humility consists in not merely acknowledging one's abjection, but in taking pleasure therein, not from any want of breadth or courage, but to give the more glory to God's Divine Majesty, and to esteem one's neighbour more highly than one's self.

If you have to do with one who is unquestionably a slanderer, do not excuse him by calling him frank and free-spoken; do not call one who is notoriously vain, liberal and elegant; do not call dangerous levities mere simplicity; do not screen disobedience under the name of zeal; or arrogance, of frankness; or evil intimacy, of friendship. No, my friends, we must never, in our wish to shun slander, foster or flatter vice in others: but we must call evil evil, and sin sin, and so doing we shall serve God's glory.

Marital intercourse is certainly holy, lawful and praiseworthy in itself and profitable to society, yet in certain circumstances it can prove dangerous, as when through excess the soul is made sick with venial sin, or through the violation and perversion of its primary end, killed by mortal sin; such perversion, detestable in proportion to its departure from the true order, being always mortal sin, for it is never lawful to exclude the primary end of marriage which is the procreation of children.

यदि तमाम कोशिशों के बाद भी आप सफल न हो सकें, तो आप हमारे प्रभु को इससे अधिक प्रसन्न नहीं कर सकते कि आप अपनी इच्छा को उन पर न्योछावर कर दें और पूरी तरह से शांत, विनम्र तथा समर्पित होकर उनकी दिव्य इच्छा और मर्जी के प्रति पूरी तरह से नतमस्तक रहें।

If after all your efforts you cannot succeed, you could not please our Lord more than by sacrificing to Him your will, and remaining in tranquility, humility, and devotion, entirely conformed and submissive to His divine will and good pleasure.

स्वभावतः हम सभी में हुक्म चलाने की प्रवृत्ति होती है और आज्ञा मानने से भारी चिढ़ होती है; फिर भी यह तय है कि हुक्म चलाने से ज्यादा हमारा भला आज्ञा मानने में है; इसीलिए महान आत्माओं को हमेशा से आज्ञापालन से गहरा लगाव रहा है और उन्होंने उसी में अपना सारा आनंद और सुकून पाया है।

Naturally we all have an inclination to command, and a great aversion to obey; and yet it is certain that it is more for our good to obey than to command; hence perfect souls have always had a great affection for obedience, and have found all their joy and comfort in it.

पवित्रता सभी सद्गुणों में एक सुंदर सफेद लिली की तरह है, जो इंसानों को लगभग देवदूतों के समान बना देती है। हर चीज अपनी शुद्धता के अनुसार ही सुंदर होती है। और इंसान की शुद्धता उसकी पवित्रता है, जिसे सदाचार, सम्मान और निष्कलंकता भी कहा जाता है; और इसके विपरीत जो है उसे पतन या भ्रष्टाचार कहा जाता है; संक्षेप में, अन्य सभी सद्गुणों की तुलना में इसकी यह खास विशेषता है कि यह आत्मा और शरीर दोनों को सुंदर और दाग-रहित बनाए रखती है।

Chastity is the lily of virtues, and makes men almost equal to Angels. Everything is beautiful in accordance with its purity. Now the purity of man is chastity, which is called honesty, and the observance of it, honor and also integrity; and its contrary is called corruption; in short, it has this peculiar excellence above the other virtues, that it preserves both soul and body fair and unspotted.

सच्चा सहनशील व्यक्ति न तो अपने बुरे भाग्य का रोना रोता है और न ही दूसरों से दया की भीख माँगता है। वह अपनी पीड़ाओं के बारे में स्वाभाविक, सच्ची और स्पष्ट तरीके से बात करता है—बिना किसी शिकायत, कोहराम या बात का बतंगड़ बनाए।

The truly patient man neither complains of his hard lot nor desires to be pitied by others. He speaks of his sufferings in a natural, true, and sincere way, without murmuring, complaining, or exaggerating them.

अपने हृदय की पवित्रता को बढ़ाने के लिए रोज मेहनत करें, जो कि चीजों का सही मूल्य आंकने और उन्हें ईश्वर की इच्छा के तराजू में तौलने में निहित है।

Work hard every day at increasing your purity of heart, which consists in appraising things and weighing them in the balance of God's will.

दिव्य प्रेम जिस हद तक हमारी आत्मा को सुंदर बनाता है और हमें ईश्वर की नजरों में प्यारा बनाता है, उसे 'कृपा' (Grace) कहते हैं; जिस हद तक यह हमें भलाई करने की शक्ति देता है, उसे 'करुणा या परोपकार' (Charity) कहते हैं; लेकिन जब यह पूर्णता के उस स्तर पर पहुँच जाता है जहाँ यह हमें केवल भलाई करने के लिए ही प्रेरित नहीं करता, बल्कि उसे बेहद सावधानी, बार-बार और सहजता से करने योग्य बनाता है, तब इसे 'भक्ति' (Devotion) कहा जाता है।

In so far as divine love beautifies our souls. And makes us pleasing to His divine Majesty, it is called grace; in so far as it gives us strength to do good, it is called charity; but when it reaches such a degree of perfection, that it makes us not only do the good, but do so carefully, frequently and readily, then it is called devotion.

आत्माओं को डराया-धमकाया जाना पसंद नहीं है, बल्कि उन्हें प्यार से वापस लाया जाना चाहिए; इंसान का स्वभाव ही ऐसा होता है।

Those who commit these types of scandals are guility of the spiritual equivalent of murder, but I, here among you to prevent something far worst for you. While those who give scandal are guilty of the spiritual equivalent of murder, those who take scandal- who allow scandals to destroy faith- are guilty of spiritual suicide.

अशालीन लोगों की संगति से दूर रहें, खासकर तब जब वे ढीठ भी हों, जैसा कि अक्सर होता है; ...ये भ्रष्ट आत्माएं और दूषित हृदय चाहे वे किसी भी लिंग के हों, शायद ही किसी से ऐसी बात करते हैं जिससे सामने वाला इंसान किसी न किसी रूप में पवित्रता से न गिर जाए; उनकी आँखों में और उनकी साँसों में बेसिलिस्क (पौराणिक जहरीला जीव) की तरह जहर होता है। इसके विपरीत, पवित्र और गुणी लोगों की संगति में रहें; अक्सर पवित्र चीजों का मनन करें और उन्हें पढ़ें; क्योंकि ईश्वर का वचन पवित्र है और जो लोग इसमें आनंद लेते हैं, यह उन्हें भी पवित्र बना देता है।

Frequent not the company of immodest persons, especially if they be also impudent, as is generally the case; ...these corrupted souls and infected hearts scarcely speak to any, either of the same or a different sex, without causing them to fall in some degree from purity; they have poison in their eyes and in their breath, like basilisks. On the contrary, keep company with the chaste and virtuous; often meditate upon and read holy things; for the word of God is chaste, and makes those also chaste that delight in it.

क्या यह बहुत बड़ी विडंबना नहीं है कि कल्पना में हम बहुत सूरमा होते हैं और असलियत में उतने ही बड़े कायर?

Is it not a great temptation to be so valiant in imagination and so cowardly in execution?

आज्ञापालन हृदय का समर्पण है, पवित्रता शरीर का और सांसारिक वस्तुओं का त्याग—ईश्वर के प्रेम और सेवा के लिए है। वास्तव में वे लोग धन्य हैं जो आज्ञाकारी हैं, क्योंकि ईश्वर उन्हें कभी भी भटकने नहीं देगा।

Obedience is a consecration of the heart, chastity of the body, and poverty of all worldly goods to the Love and Service of God. Blessed indeed are the obedient, for God will never permit them to go astray.

There are many who say to the Lord, "I give myself wholly to Thee, without any reserve," but there are few who embrace the practice of this abandonment, which consists in receiving with a certain indifference every sort of event, as it happens in conformity with Divine Providence, as well afflictions as consolations, contempt and reproaches as honor and glory.

विनम्रता हमारे जीवन को ईश्वर की नजरों में स्वीकार्य बनाती है, और कोमलता हमें इंसानों की नजरों में प्रिय बनाती है।

Humility makes our lives acceptable to God, meekness makes us acceptable to men.

चूँकि ईश्वर अक्सर अपने स्वर्गदूतों के माध्यम से हमें प्रेरणा भेजता है, इसलिए हमें भी उन्हीं दूतों के ज़रिए अपनी प्रार्थनाएँ और भावनाएँ बार-बार उसे समर्पित करनी चाहिए।

Since God often sends us inspirations by means of His angels, we should frequently return our aspirations to him by means of the same messengers.

जब तक ईश्वर की महिमा हो रही हो, तब तक हमें इससे कोई फ़र्क नहीं पड़ना चाहिए कि यह काम किसने किया है।

Provided that God be glorified, we must not care by whom.

Every vocation becomes more agreeable when united with devotion.

Better make penitents by gentleness than hypocrites by severity.

सरलता से बढ़कर कोई भी हुनर इतना अच्छा और वांछनीय नहीं है।

There is no artifice as good and desirable as simplicity.

हम कई बार अच्छे स्वर्गदूत बनने में इतने व्यस्त हो जाते हैं कि अच्छे इंसान बनना ही भूल जाते हैं।

We are sometimes so busy being good angels that we neglect to be good men and women.

बीते हुए कल को पूरी तरह भुला दीजिए और दाऊद की तरह कहिए: अब मैं अपने ईश्वर से सच्चे अर्थों में प्रेम करना शुरू कर रहा हूँ।

Consider all the past as nothing, and say, like David: Now I begin to love my God.

इस बात की बारीक जाँच मत करते रहिए कि आप बहुत कुछ कर रहे हैं या थोड़ा, बुरा कर रहे हैं या भला; बस यह ज़रूरी है कि आपका काम पापपूर्ण न हो और आप पूरे मन से हर काम ईश्वर के लिए करने का प्रयास कर रहे हों। जहाँ तक हो सके हर काम को अच्छी तरह करने की कोशिश कीजिए, लेकिन जब वह पूरा हो जाए, तो उसके बारे में सोचना बंद कर दीजिए। इसके बजाय, आगे क्या करना है, इस पर ध्यान दीजिए। प्रभु के बताए मार्ग पर सीधे चलते रहिए और खुद को परेशान मत कीजिए। हमें अपनी कमियों से नफ़रत ज़रूरी है, लेकिन शांत और संयमित भाव से; न कि चिड़चिड़ेपन और बेचैनी के साथ।

Do not scrutinize so closely whether you are doing much or little, ill or well, so long as what you do is not sinful and that you are heartily seeking to do everything for God. Try as far as you can to do everything well, but when it is done, do not think about it. Try, rather, to think of what is to be done next. Go on simply in the Lord's way, and do not torment yourself. We ought to hate our faults, but with a quiet, calm hatred; not pettishly and anxiously.

अगर शरीर को ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा खाया-पिया दिया जाए, तो आत्मा उसका बोझ नहीं सह पाती; लेकिन अगर शरीर को बहुत कम दिया जाए, तो वह आत्मा का साथ नहीं निभा पाता।

The spirit cannot endure the body when overfed, but, if underfed, the body cannot endure the spirit.

नृत्य (डांस) शैतान की बारात है, और जो व्यक्ति इसमें प्रवेश करता है, वह शैतान के वश में हो जाता है।

A dance is the devil's procession, and he that entereth into a dance, entereth into his possession.

Obedience is a virtue of so excellent a nature, that Our Lord was pleased to mark its observance upon the whole course of His life; thus He often says, He did not come to do His Own will, but that of His Heavenly Father.

The elephant, not only the largest but the most intelligent of animals, provides us with an excellent example. It is faithful and tenderly loving to the female of its choice, mating only every third year and then for no more than five days, and so secretly as never to be seen, until, on the sixth day, it appears and goes at once to wash its whole body in the river, unwilling to return to the herd until thus purified. Such good and modest habits are an example to husband and wife.

How are you to meet the swarm of foolish attachments, triflings, and undesirable inclinations which beset you? By turning sharply away, and thoroughly renouncing such vanities, flying to the Saviour's Cross, and clasping His Crown of thorns to your heart, so that these little foxes may not spoil your vines. Beware of entering into any manner of treaty with the Enemy; do not delude yourself by listening to him while intending to reject him.

This the good Queen Blanche did most earnestly by St. Louis, her son: witness her oft-repeated words, "My son, I would sooner see you die than guilty of a mortal sin;" words which sank so deeply into the saintly monarch's heart, that he himself said there was no day on which they did not recur to his mind, and strengthen him in treading God's ways.

Represent to yourself a dark city all burning and stinking with fire and brimstone. The damned are in the depth of hell within this woful city, where they suffer unspeakable torments in all their senses and members. Consider above all the eternity of their pains, which above all things makes hell intolerable.

Consider the pains which martyrs have endured, and think how even now many people are bearing afflictions beyond all measure greater than yours, and say, "Of a truth my trouble is comfort, my torments are but roses as compared to those whose life is a continual death, without solace, or aid or consolation, borne down with a weight of grief tenfold greater than mine."

Many great persons have been of opinion that love is no other thing than complacency itself, in which they have had much appearance of reason. For not only does the movement of love take its origin from the complacency which the heart feels at the first approach of good, and find its end in a second complacency which returns to the heart by union with the thing beloved--but further, it depends for its preservation on this complacency, and can only subsist through it as through its mother and nurse; so that as soon as the complacency ceases, love ceases.

When the bee has gathered the dew of heaven and the earth's sweetest nectar from the flowers, it turns it into honey, then hastens to its hive. In the same way, the priest, having taken from the altar the Son of God (who is as the dew from heaven, and true son of Mary, flower of our humanity), gives him to you as delicious food.

गरीब होने पर या भीख माँगने पर कभी शर्म मत महसूस करो। जो कुछ भी मिले उसे विनम्रता से स्वीकार करो और मना किए जाने पर भी मन में कोई मलाल न रखो। अक्सर माता मैरी की अपने दिव्य शिशु के साथ मिस्र की यात्रा को याद करो, और उस गरीबी, अपमान तथा कष्ट को याद करो जो उन्होंने सहे। यदि तुम उनके उदाहरण पर चलोगे तो अपनी इस गरीबी के बीच भी सचमुच अमीर बन जाओगे।

Do not be ashamed of being poor, or of asking alms. Receive what is given you with humility, and accept a refusal meekly. Frequently call to mind Our Lady's journey into Egypt with her Holy Child, and of all the poverty, contempt and suffering they endured. If you follow their example you will indeed be rich amid your poverty.

Does anyone fail to see that the world is an unjust judge, gracious and well disposed to its own children but harsh and rigorous towards the children of God?

All true and living devotion presupposes the love of God and indeed it is neither more nor less than a very real love of God, though not always of the same kind; for that Love one while shining on the soul we call grace, which makes us acceptable to His Divine Majesty; when it strengthens us to do well, it is called Charity; but when it attains its fullest perfection, in which it not only leads us to do well, but to act carefully, diligently, and promptly, then it is called Devotion.

जरूरत के समय मिलने वाली ऐसी मदद से कभी खीझिए मत; गरीबी का एक बड़ा वरदान इसी में छिपा है। बिना किसी परेशानी को सहे अमीर बनने की चाह रखना बहुत बड़ा दुस्साहस है, दूसरे शब्दों में कहें तो—गरीबी का दिखावा और अमीरी की सारी सुख-सुविधाएं एक साथ चाहना गलत है।

Do not fret under such assistance as is needful; therein lies one great grace of poverty. It were overambitious to aim at being poor without suffering any inconvenience, in other words, to have the credit of poverty and the convenience of riches.

Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations, and say continually: 'The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart has trusted in Him and I am helped. He is not only with me but in me and I in Him.'

Do everything calmly and peacefully. Do as much as you can as well as you can. Strive to see God in all things without exception, and consent to His will joyously. Do everything for God, uniting yourself to him in word and deed. Walk very simply with the Cross of the Lord and be at peace with yourself.

ईश्वर की सेवा करने के बड़े अवसर कभी-कभार ही मिलते हैं, लेकिन छोटे-छोटे अवसर रोज़ हमारे आस-पास मौजूद रहते हैं।

Great occasions for serving God come seldom, but little ones surround us daily.
