The domestic relations precede, and in our present existence are worth more than all our other social ties. They give the first throb to the heart, and unseal the deep fountains of its love. [Peace] is the highest and most strenuous act of the soul, but an entirely harmonious act, in which all our powers and affections are blending in a beautiful proportion, and sustain and perfect one another. The chief evil of war is more evil. War is the concentration of all human crimes. Here is its distinguishing, accursed brand. Under its standard gather violence, malignity, rage, fraud, perfidy, rapacity, and lust. If it only slew man, it would do little. It turns man into a beast of prey.

It is chiefly through books that we enjoy intercourse with the superior minds, and these invaluable means of communication are in reach of all. In the best books, great men talk to us, give us their most precious thoughts, and pour their souls into ours. God be thanked for books. They are the voices of the distant and the dead, and make us heirs of the spiritual life of past ages. Books are true levellers. They give to all, who faithfully use them, the society, the spiritual presence of the best and greatest of our race.

Others are affected by what I am, and say, and do. So that a single act of mine may spread and spread in widening circles, through a nation or humanity. Through my vice I intensify the taint of vice throughout the universe. Through my misery I make multitudes sad. On the other hand, every development of my virtue makes me an ampler blessing to my race. Every new truth that I gain makes me a brighter light to humanity.

Soul Gathers Force It is possible, when the future is dim, when our depressed faculties can form no bright ideas of the perfection and happiness of a better world,-it is possible still to cling to the conviction of God's merciful purpose towards His creatures, of His parental goodness even in suffering, still to feel that the path of duty, though trodden with a heavy heart, leads to peace.

War is to be ranked among the most dreadful calamities which fall on a guilty world; and, what deserves consideration, it tends to multiply and perpetuate itself without end. It feeds and grows on the blood which it sheds. The passions, from which it springs, gain strength and fury from indulgence.

ईश्वर की इच्छा को वैसे ही तुरंत पूरा करना जैसे वह हमारे सामने प्रकट होती है, हर घड़ी—मैं तो यह कहूँगा कि हर पल—यह पूछना कि वह हमसे क्या चाहते हैं, और अपने आपको, अपने मित्रों को तथा हर स्वार्थ को उनके नियंत्रण में सौंप देना, इस पूर्ण विश्वास के साथ कि वे जो मार्ग दिखाते हैं वह हमें हमारी पूर्णता और स्वयं उनके पास ले जाता है—यही एक साथ हमारा कर्तव्य भी है और सौभाग्य भी; तो फिर हम इस सीधे-साधे और सरल मार्ग पर क्यों नहीं चलते?

The miracles of Christ were studiously performed in the most unostentatious way. He seemed anxious to veil His majesty under the love with which they were wrought.

No man receives the full culture of a man in whom the sensibility to the beautiful is not cherished; and there is no condition of life from which it should be excluded. Of all luxuries this is the cheapest, and the most at hand, and most important to those conditions where coarse labor tends to give grossness to the mind.

Other blessings may be taken away, but if we have acquired a good friend by goodness, we have a blessing which improves in value when others fail.

यह कितना अद्भुत विचार है कि वर्तमान में सहेजा गया सदगुण ही वास्तव में उस अनंत जीवन का आरंभ है, जिसमें हम प्रवेश कर चुके हैं!

What a sublime doctrine it is, that goodness cherished now is eternal life already entered on!

The cry has been that when war is declared, all opposition should therefore be hushed. A sentiment more unworthy of a free country could hardly be propagated. If the doctrine be admitted, rulers have only to declare war and they are screened at once from scrutiny. . . . In war, then, as in peace, assert the freedom of speech and of the press. सच्चੀ महानता का किसी मनुष्य के कार्यक्षेत्र या दायरे से कोई लेना-देना नहीं है। यह उसके बाहरी कामों के आकार या उसके प्रभावों के विस्तार में नहीं निहित है। सबसे महान लोग भी तुलनात्मक रूप से बहुत कम काम कर सकते हैं।
